We are hiring a full-time, permanent Manager, Distribution Engineering Standards position working out of Edmonton, AB.

The Manager, Distribution Engineering Standards is accountable for the performance and management of the Distribution Engineering Standards team within EPCOR Electricity Operations. This includes ensuring engineering standards, construction standards, and technical specifications are developed and updated to meet all applicable codes, standards, procedures and work practices while accounting for worker and public safety, system reliability, operational and constructability requirements, and ensuring all applicable internal processes are followed. 

  

What you'd be responsible for 

  

  • Providing input to the Integrated Distribution Engineering Services business plan, ensuring appropriate understanding of EDTI's Capital Plan throughout Distribution, and ensuring there is on-going effective positioning and appropriate relationships between other positions in Distribution and Transmission and in the rest of EUI.
  • Creating and managing a strong team of employees, including determination of optimal numbers, recruitment, retention, and development.
  • Developing and nurturing high performance, high discipline, engaged, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented work force that is easy to do business with and employees have the training, tools and resources to do their jobs safely.
  • Approving, developing, implementing and managing the Distribution engineering standards, construction standards and material & equipment specifications, ensuring compliance with safety standards, relevant acts, standards, codes and regulations.
  • Authenticating and approving structural and electrical calculations, technical reports undertaken for the analysis, evaluation, and acceptance of materials and structures for use within Electricity Operations' aerial and underground distribution system.
  • Directing, conducting and reporting on electrical, structural and mechanical failure analysis and investigations relating to aerial and underground construction materials, equipment, and structures to ensure the safety, operability and reliability of EDTI's system is maintained.
  • Ensuring the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics. Establish, monitor, measure and report on performance metrics in concert with business plan targets.  Analyzing and identifying issues impacting optimal performance and establishing initiatives for continuous improvement.
  • Developing, implementing, and reviewing Distribution Engineering Standards processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements and to ensure mitigation of risks.
  • Assessing distribution engineering utility best practices in engineering design, work methods, materials, equipment, tools, instruments to enable EPCOR Distribution to move further towards an industry leading position in engineering & construction standards, and material specification development to ensure construction methods and work practices are positioned to enable a zero injury culture.
  • Establishing and encouraging strong cross functional relationships within Electricity Operations.  Utilizing change management to ensure ongoing engagement to new systems and processes.
  • Identifying the necessary budget requirements for the provision of effective succession planning to ensure engineering personnel (engineers & technologists), technology upgrades, design improvements, and knowledge transfer is maintained through effective acquisition and talent pool development of optimal human resources with a focus to ensure that operational, safety and reliability goals are achieved.
  • Establishing annual budgets that reflect Electricity Operations long term plan, regulatory approvals and operational needs.  Monitoring expenditures to ensure spending is within budget
  • Ensuring that the Distribution Engineering Standards team develops, performs or assists in the timely and complete responses to customer and stakeholder issues as required and develops strong relationships with industry partners.

  

What's required to be successful 

  

  • Degree in Engineering or a Diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institute.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Professional Licensee (PL Engineering) designation with APEGA.
  • 10+ years of experience in distribution engineering including direct design experience in aerial and underground utility distribution systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of aerial and underground distribution system's engineering design standards, material specifications and EDTI engineering practices, processes and guidelines.
  • In-depth knowledge of aerial and underground utility distribution system's safety standards, acts, codes, regulations and industry standards & practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of aerial and underground distribution system's construction methods, procedures, work practices and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and to develop new and innovative solutions as required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical, structural and mechanical calculations, analysis tools and assumptions used for utility specific material applications and structural loading conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a larger management team; influence people through effective communication skills; and influence problem resolution through strong and effective facilitation skills.
  • Ability to coach, provide performance feedback, and discipline as required.
