The French Creek Utility is regulated and has a Class II Water Treatment Facility and a Class III Water Distribution system.

As a Lead Hand Operator, you possess highly developed leadership skills and are a team-oriented, self-motivated individual. Your exceptional interpersonal skills enable you to build rapport quickly with others, create a positive influence, motivate team members, and ensure the safe and efficient operations of the plant.  Reporting to the Site Manager, you will ensure results through the supervision, coordination and execution of operations by overseeing and undertaking the work of staff, equipment operators and sub-contractors.

The bustling marine community of French Creek is situated on Highway 19A, which runs along the east coast of Vancouver Island beside the open water of the Strait of Georgia.  French Creek's working harbour is home to a large commercial fishing fleet and many charter operations that can take visitors fishing, sightseeing, and diving. French Creek Marina offers sheltered moorage and yachting amenities for sailboats and pleasure craft. Recreational activities for all whether you are an avid golfer (6 world-class courses in the area) or fisher (annual salmon run, haven for salt water and even trout)  or just want to enjoy nature at one of the Provincial parks (Englishman River Falls, Rathtrevor Beach) it is all here. You can take a scenic road trip south and about 2 hours be in the beautiful city of Victoria.  If you prefer visiting for a Metropolitan city just a short drive to drive to Nanaimo, jump on a ferry and about 3 hours you can be in beautiful Vancouver.

What you'd be responsible for 

In the Lead Hand Operator role, you are accountable to the Site Manager.  Main accountabilities of the role include, but are not limited to: 

  • Ensuring compliance with British Columbia legislation as it relates to water treatment facilities and distribution systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with performance and reporting requirements
  • Supervising, coaching and ensuring optimal performance of operating staff.
  • Assisting in the delivering of training for new and existing Operators.
  • Planning and coordinating operating, maintenance and capital work activities.
  • Customer, stakeholder and regulatory contact and reporting as required.
  • Participating in the operations' on-call rotation.
  • Assisting with site operations and maintenance tasks as required.
  • Troubleshooting day-to-day operational issues and developing solutions to rectify these issues.
  • Coordinating daily /weekly safety briefing/discussion and overseeing site HSE permit program. 

What's required to be successful? 

The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications: 

  • Grade 12 diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education).
  • Completion of a technical program specializing in Water and Wastewater Treatment or equivalent.
  • Minimum of Level II certification in Water Treatment and a minimum Level III certification in Water Distribution.
  • At least 5 years of directly related experience as an Operator in water and/or wastewater fields.
  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • A proven willingness to maintain and upgrade certifications.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and an affinity to learn other software systems as required.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills combined with the ability to apply knowledge and problem-solving skills to respond to issues in a timely manner.
  • The ability to collect, understand, manipulate and report data are critical to this position. Writing skills are essential.
  • Communication skills including verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate and build relationships with internal parties and external customers as well as other stakeholders.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License with 6 demerits or less.
    • Ability to qualify for and maintain a valid EPCOR driver's permit.
    • A 5 year Commercial Driver Abstract will be required upon hire. 

Additionally these are valuable assets to have: 

  • Previous experience and a proven ability to use workflow platforms such as IVARA for asset management/equipment maintenance work orders.
  • Working familiarity with the use of Claros WIMS Water Information Management application.

Other important facts about this job 

This position is located in French Creek, near Parksville, BC, and the successful candidate will be required to live within an hour radius of the French Creek water system. Participation in the housing allowance may be available and for candidates that are not currently a resident of this area relocation support may be provided. 

Wage: starting at $48.08
Final wage will be determined at the time of hire on a matrix scale recognizing Certification levels and directly related experience.

Hours of work: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week.
Overtime and weekend work may be required.
Participation in the on-call rotation system.
