Description
The Ontario College of Teachers licenses, governs and regulates the Ontario teaching profession in the public interest. Like accounting, nursing and engineering, teaching is a regulated profession. In Ontario, this means the College oversees more than 220,000 Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) working in all publicly funded elementary and secondary schools as well as some private schools. They set the ethical standards and standards of the profession and are also responsible for initial and ongoing teacher education, licensing, and discipline.

The Ontario College of Teachers is looking for qualified and dedicated Council Members, reflecting Ontario's diversity, who will support the well-being of Ontario's two million students and help shape the future of education in the province. The College is recruiting for public (non-member) vacancies, meaning individuals of the public who are not now, nor have been, licensed by the Ontario College of Teachers.

As a key member of the Council, you will be responsible for attending at least four public council meetings annually (three virtual, one in person). You will be eligible to serve on 2 to 3 sub-committees, such as Selection and Nominating, Audit and Finance, and Human Resources. Your role will involve providing oversight and policy direction for the College through the Registrar and ensuring that the College is carrying out its mandate in compliance with the Ontario College of Teachers Act. You will oversee the strategic plan to ensure it aligns with the College's mandate and participate in a competency-based selection process to appoint members to various positions. Additionally, you will review and approve finances, including the annual budget and investments, and oversee the hiring process for the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer position.

Ideal candidates will have deep executive leadership experience, preferably in business management, law, academia, and/or finance. Previous governance and regulatory experience are desired, along with a commitment to public service and education. Candidates should be dedicated to protecting the public interest and enhancing quality learning experiences for students. The College seeks individuals who are representative of Ontario's diversity, and especially encourages applications from Indigenous persons, racialized persons, women, persons with disabilities, 2SLGBTQ+ persons, Francophone persons and others who may contribute to the diversification of ideas and experiences.
