PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As the General Manager Operations you will ensure the Prairie North Divisions’ yards and train performance delivers to the Integrated Operating Plan and includes the execution of plans and strategies for safety, service and productivity to achieve financial results.  Provide leadership accountability for inputs and outputs of safety, service, productivity and financial metrics and ensure organizational effectiveness with focused improvement on the development of the workforce for succession planning for operations positions within own scope.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Optimize productivity (e.g. terminal velocity) by ensuring on-time train performance, yard performance and fluidity to meet customer requirements;
  • Optimize asset utilization (locomotives, shops, terminals) by delivering solid performance on facility cycle times, locomotive servicing, and bad order repair metrics;
  • Optimize organizational design, development of employees and solid succession plans for direct report positions;
  • Operate within a budget and have input to capital budgets to ensure successful Canadian/US Operations;
  • Deliver solid results based on the inputs developed and executed consistently; 
  • Develop input plans to deliver to safety targets;
  • Ensure the optimization and productivity of the Running Trade Employees/Train & Engine and Mechanical workforces;
  • Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and provide input to Labour Relations for future contract negotiations;
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies and maintain positive relationships them (e.g. FRA, Transport Canada, Labour Canada, etc.);
  • Ensure direct interaction with Sales & Marketing and customers, as required.
     

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • University degree would be considered an asset: technical expertise at a major railway may be considered;
  • 15+ years of Railroad experience is required;
  • 10+ years of managing employees is required;
  • 5+ years’ experience in capital planning;
  • Strong understanding of collective agreements, labour strategies, and managing unionized labour force;
  • Strong understanding of Railway Operations;
  • Understanding of appropriate internal and external regulations;
  • Ability to drill down, understand root cause and resolve complex issues;
  • Ability to provide pinpointed feedback in a clear and concise manner;
  • Ability to provide service to customers and community;
  • Must be results and safety oriented;
  • Financial acumen;
  • Ability to deal with regulators;
  • Ability to influence;
  • Ability to effectively communicate messages in a way that will be understood readily by each level below;
  • Optimize organizational design, development of employees and solid succession plans for direct report positions;
  • Results focused with an ability to apply oneself to support 24x7 operations.

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CP. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.

 

This is a permanent, full-time position located at 1702 -  30th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2G 5S4 . The compensation for this position is competitive $190,000 - $280,000 consistent with industry and position norms, and commensurate with your experience.
