Job Overview

Are you a strategic thinker who enjoys working reciprocally to design, develop and deliver market defining engineering and construction project strategies in a multi-dimensional, complex environment? We are looking for you. Working closely with the category director, you will optimize value, enhance Suncor’s reputation, lead change and effectively influence business decisions. You will work extensively with others across the organization and support Suncor’s top quartile performance in capital project execution.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working with internal Supply Chain Management organizations, business partners and the supply community, you will develop commercial projects (from pre-development activities through advanced stage development and to commercial execution) that meet business partner priorities and contribute to Suncor’s goal for top quartile capital project execution performance
  • You will lead in the development and execution of highly complex/high risk sourcing strategies, negotiations and commercial initiatives, while effectively documenting, communicating and obtaining consensus for developed commercial strategies
  • Monitor, communicate, and respond to changing market conditions and business drivers to improve position and minimize risk
  • You will be responsible for developing contract commercial structures to support project objectives and overall category strategies
  • Working with business partners, you will engage, develop and handle supplier performance to extract the greatest value in supplier quality, productivity, total cost-effectiveness, enhanced service levels, risk management, sustainability and innovation
  • Manage business partner and stakeholder relationships, and give to a culture of integration, collaboration and trust, and represent Suncor on industry panels and/or regulatory hearings

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • 15 or more years of relevant professional experience
  • 10 years of work experience in a capital intensive industrial sector, either within an owner, engineering, EPC or construction company, including consulting firms and service providers to the heavy industrial sector
  • A post-secondary education in business, engineering or law. An MBA and other recognized professional designations and training are considered an asset (P.Eng, CPA, SCMP, PMP, Six Sigma, Lean, etc.)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • You are a thought leader in capital project execution standard methodologies, engineering and construction, and market trends that affect Suncor’s capital projects, with extraordinary negotiation skills and experience in team based negotiations
  • You bring a matured knowledge of commercial agreement structures and the function and purpose of legal terms, and a knowledge of category management methodologies
  • You have a strong ability to handle complex and critical internal and external relationships
  • You bring extraordinary problem-solving and critical thinking skills and you can leverage resources to seek results; you can identify root cause issues and develop actionable plans for business partners
  • You bring strong group facilitation and presentation skills to dynamic audiences and all levels of management, and you can clearly articulate vision and what is required
  • You have organizational change management skills and a demonstrated ability to use a wide range of influencing techniques to affect positive change, and you can understand the interdependencies of emerging business opportunities and risks
  • You are results oriented with a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to develop and build high performing interdisciplinary teams with varying experiences and skill sets
  • You are an expert in leading multiple simultaneous projects requiring effective organization, time management troubleshooting skills
