Highlights of the job    

     

We are hiring a Full-time permanent Water/Wastewater Treatment Certified Operator for our Canmore location.    

     

Reporting to the Lead Hand Operator, you will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the Level III Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Level II Water Treatment Plant, and the Level III Distribution and Collection systems.  As well, you are to perform all duties in compliance with the ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System that has been implemented at the Canmore site.

What you'd be responsible for    

     

  • Working with other employees and site management by meeting all requirements for the Approvals to Operate that relate to the Canmore facility, including quality control on records and preparing reports as related to the approval and operation guidelines. 
  • Operating and troubleshooting the water treatment and wastewater treatment plants, as well as the water and wastewater distribution and collection systems.
  • Supporting maintenance staff and performing routine maintenance tasks such as: Lubricating, completing operational adjustments, and cleaning equipment; flushing and cleaning of mains; and maintaining daily logs.
  • Monitoring and meeting internal Safety and Environmental quality standards.
  • Collecting samples and data for monthly, regulatory, and operational reporting; generating and analyzing reports as required.
  • Monitoring or facilitating processes, and making the necessary adjustments to optimize water quality, quantity, and reliability.
  • Performing laboratory sampling and making calculation adjustments to process controls to determine chemical feeds, detention times, and hydraulic loading as required for plant operation. 
  • Ensuring working procedures are performed in compliance with EPCOR safety standards, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Reading and updating record system drawings. 
  • Managing the treatment and disposal of sludge.
  • Managing external contractors and following all required internal and external regulations.
  • Participating in internal and external compliance audits.
  • Responding to enquiries from the client and from the public with both tact and professionalism.
  • Proactively anticipating and resolving potential process issues through the download and analysis of information from our SCADA system and lab data. Must be comfortable with MS excel formulas and basic math concepts.
  • Ensure all work on site is being performed in compliance with the EPCOR HS&E policy, Ethics and Compliance standards.

     

What's required to be successful    

     

  • Grade 12 diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education).
  • Level 2 Certification in the areas of Water Treatment, Distribution, Wastewater Treatment, and Collection (higher levels of certification is desired).
  • 3+ years of experience in a water or wastewater treatment plant and distribution and collection is an asset.
  • Be located in communities within 1 hour of the Town of Canmore Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants or willing to relocate within these areas. This includes Canmore, Cochrane, West Calgary or surrounding areas. Company vehicle is not provided for a commute.
  • Proficient in using asset management software IVARA, SAP or similar and using SCADA control systems.
  • Experience using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Power Point and Power BI is an asset.
  • Experience using database software (HACH Wims) is an asset.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience leading other operators is an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's License with 6 or fewer demerits. Ability to qualify for and maintain a valid EPCOR driver's permit.
    • A 5 year Commercial  Drivers Abstract will be required at the time of hire.
    • A Class 3 license with Q endorsement will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Ability to demonstrate (or articulate) their strong results orientation as well as being regarded highly for their commitment to quality service and excellence.
  • Proven experience leading and motivating an operating team.
  • Clearance on pre-placement police check, reference check, medical and drug and alcohol testing.

     

Along with the qualifications (skills and behaviours) listed above you have well-developed and effective communication (verbal and written) skills, keen attention to detail, and a high degree of accuracy in everything you do. You demonstrate a solid commitment to safety and consistently take an active role in assigned tasks seeing them through to completion, combined with the ability to work well either in a team environment or with minimal supervision. In addition, you have excellent planning and organization skills combined with the ability to apply knowledge and problem-solving skills in a timely manner and are a person who creates a respectful work environment where ideas are challenged and people feel trusted and safe.

Jurisdiction: OSH    

This position is located in Canmore, Alberta at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Candidates who choose to reside in Canmore, Exshaw, Deadmans Flats, Lac des Arcs, Harvie Heights or Banff are eligible to receive the Bow Valley pay supplement.    

     

Wage: Is on a matrix scale recognizing Certification levels    

Hours of work: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week.     

  • Overtime and weekend work are required.
  • Must also participate in the on-call rotation system (30-minute response time required - temporary accommodation provided in Canmore for individuals residing outside of the Bow Valley)
