We are hiring a full-time, permanent Cableman position working out of the South Service Centre in Edmonton, AB. This position reports to the Manager, Customer Connections Operations.

As a Cableman, you are accountable for the day-to-day coordination and completion of single asset installations, maintenance and repairs of Electricity Operations' underground system. This includes proactively supporting a safe work environment and ensuring employee and public safety is paramount by making front line quality control and safety supervision a priority in all daily activities.

 

What you'd be responsible for

 

  • Coordinating and completing single asset installations, maintenance and repairs which include:
    • Setting up and organizing OSCAM permits, detours and barricading.
    • De-energizing, isolating, grounding, testing and re-energizing portions of the system including requesting switching orders and grid access.
    • Arranging customer outage requests through the P&GA site or by delivering notices when no complex customer plan is required.
    • Terminating and splicing primary and secondary cables and completing hot work on secondary cables.
    • Coordinating and assisting other non-trades crews or contractors with tasks such as materials support, cable pulling, civil, etc.
    • Acting as the Employee in Charge (with other non-trades employees onsite).
    • Entering and working in confined spaces, such as vaults and manholes, and acting as the permit receiver for confined spaces.
    • Completing project as-builts, splice sheets, IVARA notes and post-job records along with documentation, such as truck time and time cards.
    • Providing GOIs or Construction Clearance forms to single customers for demolitions or construction or providing LOA supervision to an external party.
  • Contributing to an inclusive and positive team environment by providing ongoing training, coaching and mentoring to apprentices, new hires and drivers, ensuring site roles and responsibilities are clearly explained and understood, and by treating fellow coworkers and customers with respect.
  • Ensuring the safety of others and work sites by completing thorough Safe Work Plans and discussions, which identify and mitigate onsite hazards and ensure compliance with procedures and policies.
  • Acting as an SME providing technical input and feedback to other areas on work order packages, designs, procedures and standards.
  • Maintaining truck stock, completing tool checks and equipment inspections and documenting work in the Tool Check App.
  • Managing costs at the work order level by displaying sound time management skills and ensuring efficient use of personnel at the worksite.
  • Requesting switching orders and ensuring switching is carried out safely within prescribed safety rules, procedures and work practices. Contacting customers impacted by switching orders to arrange outages.
  • Assisting in the development and revision of new and existing work practices, policies and procedures.
  • Assisting coworkers and the Foreman in resolving problems and providing coaching on task completion.
  • Writing up completed work orders, splice sheets, supplying accurate as-built information and other required documentation in a timely manner.>

 

What's required to be successful

 

  • High school Diploma, GED or equivalent level of secondary education.
  • Journeyman Power Lineman.
  • Experience as a PLT in underground operations functions.
  • Live Line Aerial Training would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to schedule interdependent areas within EPCOR and external contractors required to complete assigned work.
  • Proven knowledge of applicable regulations, including EPCOR work practices, policies and procedures, OH&S, Can/ULC, EPCOR Safety Manual, etc.
  • Knowledge of related switchgear, cables, testing methods, automation components and specialized equipment.
  • Strong project planning and decision making skills.
  • Ability to maintain calm and work effectively during outages and pressure situations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, reduce customer impacts and work without engineering designs during emergency work.

Hours of work: 80 hours biweekly

Wage: Starting at $57.79 per hour; Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and is subject to change based on the ratification of the new Collective Agreement.
