EPCOR's Water Services (EWS) group has a full-time permanent opportunity for an Operations Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join the Wastewater Treatment Plant team working out of our Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

The Gold Bar WWTP Operations EIT provides technical direction and support in the day-to-day operation of the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant and Clover Bar Biosolids Resource Recovery Facility to meet Approval to Operate requirements and support continuous improvement activities. This includes regulatory reporting, process monitoring and troubleshooting, and initiating and leading processes improvement projects that have required outcomes with time spans of up to 12 months.

What you'd be responsible for

 

The Operations  EIT is accountable to Manager, Operations Support & Training. The main accountabilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Ensuring the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics as outlined in applicable strategic and operational plans and PBR commitments. Supporting monitoring, measuring and reporting of performance metrics.
  • Leading operational improvement projects that involve identification and implementation of process control strategies, process optimization, evaluation and development of process modifications; and preparation or revision of operating procedures and ensuring their timely completion.
  • Developing, implementing and reviewing Operations processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards and regulatory requirements and ensuring mitigation of risks.
  • Leading WWTP engineering and management of change requests by reviewing validity of requests and providing a solution for the problem in a pre-approved time-frame.
  • Conducting engineering investigations and Causal Analysis as needed for incidents and equipment/process failures.
  • Supporting emergency response planning activities and supporting incident command and emergency response.
  • Taking a leading role in the development, coordination and implementation of Health, Safety & Environment processes, practices and procedures and the HSE integrated management system, in keeping with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements. Modelling and promoting behaviours consistent with EPCOR's HSE Policy.
  • Assisting with contractor procurement and management to operate the Gold Bar Park Rd. AQMS and to meet other Approval to Operate requirements.
  • Providing operational input to capital projects through various phases (pre-design, design, construction and commissioning) and ensuring that overall objectives are being met.
  • Participating in the Manager On-call program requiring off-hours support to Operations shift crews to meet EPCOR's Incident Management Procedure.
  • Analyzing and identifying issues impacting operational performance and establishing initiatives for continuous improvement to ensure wastewater effluent quality standards are exceeded.
  • Providing technical direction and support to operating staff in the day-to-day operation of the wastewater treatment plant, including process monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal groups outside Operations and with external regulators.
  • Assisting Leadership with budgeting and variance reporting.

 

What's required to be successful

 

Qualifications, experience and behaviours you possess are:

 

  • Completion of a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering or Civil/Environmental Engineering from a recognized post-secondary educational institute.
  • Registered as an EIT with APEGA or eligible for registration with APEGA.
    • If not registered with APEGA must be within 6 months of being hired.
  • Technical expertise in area of specialization and demonstrated ability to develop solutions to process problems through visualizing and breaking problems down into key elements.
  • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint and Teams.
  • Demonstrated data analysis and troubleshooting skills.

 

Additionally, these are valuable assets for the successful candidate to have:

  • Experience in water or wastewater treatment and knowledge of engineering applications in the design and operation of wastewater treatment processes.
  • Working in a large water utility or related engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of DeltaV/SCADA.
  • Advanced (Masters) degree in any related discipline.

This is a professional level position and that works Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
