OCAD University (OCAD U)—Canada’s largest and oldest art and design post-secondary institution—invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of Interdisciplinary Studies. OCAD U is undergoing a dramatic evolution that is strengthening its position as a global leader in art and design practice, research, and education, and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of Interdisciplinary Studies has played a major role in the institution’s development. The Faculty is home to four academic programs, including Visual and Critical Studies, Indigenous Visual Culture, Digital Futures, and the new Creative Writing program, and forms the academic core of every degree program at the University. It is an exemplar Faculty for interdisciplinary work—both conceptually and in practice—exploring historical, social, aesthetic, and philosophical perspectives as they relate to art and design. It’s an exciting time to join OCAD U as the University is at a key stage of its institutional transformation, with the implementation of its Academic Plan and its six guiding principles: decolonization, diversity and equity, sustainability, valuing faculty, interdisciplinarity and health and wellness. Reporting to the Vice-President, Academic & Provost, the Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of Interdisciplinary Studies is responsible for the Faculty’s educational and research development, facilitating community and institutional partnerships, enhancing the student experience within the Faculty, and aligning the goals of the Faculty with the University’s Academic and Strategic Plans. As the Faculty is inextricably linked with the other Faculties found at OCAD U—it is home to Art and Design Histories, English, as well as breadth areas and a number of new programs—the new Dean will work collaboratively and in close consultation with the Vice-President, Academic and Provost and the Deans of Design, Art, and Graduate Studies. The ideal candidate is an inspiring leader with significant teaching experience, and possesses a PhD from a recognized university or a relevant advanced or terminal degree. The Dean must have a collaborative, transparent, and consultative leadership style; exceptional communication and problem-solving skills; strategic planning and budgetary experience, and a track record of leadership that promotes financial stability and sustainability; a proven record of leadership gained in a cultural organization or post-secondary institution; and, the ability to effectively articulate how lived experience transforms and invigorates curriculum and research. The Dean will also have significant administrative and community-building experience to contribute to OCAD U’s efforts to decolonize curriculum and reimagine pedagogy, as well as the ability to implement organizational change strategies designed to redress systemic, structural, and historical disadvantage in employment as well as educational policy and practice. The Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of Interdisciplinary Studies must be eligible for appointment with tenure at the senior ranks. Located on a twelve-building campus, OCAD University offers a vibrant and stimulating work environment for over 600 faculty and academic staff, more than 4,260 undergraduate students, and over 300 graduate students.
