We are looking for an Instrumentation Technologist to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The Instrumentation Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The Instrumentation Group provides scientific electronics, computing facilities and instrumentation to support the research carried out at the Flight Research Laboratory (FRL), on both the NRC Aerospace Research Centre and contracted aircraft. The group’s primary functions include design, development and manufacture of board and system level electronic equipment; the integration of this equipment with aircraft sensors, primary control systems, displays and avionics systems; the acquisition and recording of research data operational support and engineering maintenance of installed equipment.

As the incumbent of this position, you will be responsible for the installation, wiring and support of flight test equipment on aircraft engaged in FRL research programs. Limited instrumentation design work will also be required. You must be willing to travel off-site with aircraft to conduct field-testing and to fly as a member of the flight test engineering team in the research aircraft.

SalaryFrom $53,987 To $73,935 Per Annum.
Education RequirementsDiploma from a recognized university or technical college or institution as an Electrical or Electronics Engineer or Technologist from a three-year program.

Equivalency

A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
Essential SkillsTechnical Competencies

•Solid knowledge of analog and digital circuitry;
•Solid knowledge of Airworthiness Standards, Engineering and Installation Practices FAA Advisory Circular 43.13-1A / Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment (RTCA/DO-160D) or Wiring Standards for Aerospace Vehicles MIL-W-5088K;
•Ability to read and understand wiring schematics;
•Demonstrated ability to build and install wiring and cable harnesses including completion of wiring splices and connector terminations using typical crimping and soldering techniques; and
•Demonstrated ability to use electronic test equipment such as an oscilloscope, digital multimeter, or logic analyzer.
Experience•Significant hands-on experience installing, trouble-shooting, maintaining, modifying, operating and/or designing modern electronics, instrumentation or data acquisition systems including associated wiring and cable harnesses;
•Basic experience operating scientific equipment;
•Basic experience working directly with external clients;
•Basic experience working with mechanical component assembly and disassembly;
•Basic experience with calibration procedures;
•Significant and recent experience working with a personal computer and standard software (such as MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook); and
•Basic experience working with Electronic Computer Aided Drawing (ECAD) packages.

Assets:
•Basic experience working with software development tools, particularly in C and C++, assembly or a graphical environment such as Lab View;
•Experience with flight test instrumentation;
•Hands-on experience installing and maintaining equipment onboard aircraft to approved data and acceptable aircraft standards including knowledge of avionics and aircraft wiring, aircraft systems and operational procedures.

Work SettingsCondition of Employment

Secret (II). A Secret clearance must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

•You must be able to obtain and maintain an Airport Restricted Area Pass (ARAP) from the Ottawa Airport Pass Control Office;
•This position requires work to be performed on and around aircrafts. You must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. These duties include: working from elevated platforms; lifting moderate weights; wearing personal protective equipment such as a respirator and safety goggles. You are expected to work with chemicals and materials commonly found in the aircraft industry;
•You must be able to travel on deployments. You must be able to fly as aircrew on-board experimental aircraft and be able to access system locations (i.e., confined and/or high places) on aircraft; and
•You must be able to work daily indoors and outdoors.
