PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Project Manager – Special Projects will provide Canadian Pacific with effective project management of internally and externally funded railway related facilities and projects. The successful candidate will conduct feasibility studies, site reconnaissance, site surveying, project development, conceptual & detailed engineering design, and will direct and coordinate site work activities associated with assigned major construction projects, ensuring completion within targeted budget amounts and timelines.

 

 POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide oversight in execution of assigned capital projects;
  • Provide safety leadership by fostering continuous improvement in workplace safety through deployment of standardized work procedures on project worksites;
  • Provide oversight to consultants working on CP projects;
  • Provide timely and responsive service to Business Development for 3rd party projects;
  • Deliver projects within defined scope, timeframe and budget;
  • Co-ordinate work activities with internal and external departments and customers to ensure the safe, cost-effective and responsive execution of new construction projects and programs;
  • Prepare and update drawings, memos, technical reports and external correspondence in a clear and concise manner;
  • Ability to report on project progress, and influence decision making by senior management on project funding and design issues;
  • Ability to professionally represent CP’s position on technical and operational matters to third party agencies involved in the oversight and execution of large capital projects;
  • Requires travel when necessary to visit project sites and manage on site work. Project sites may be remote.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree - Civil Engineering;
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer is preferred, Technicians and EIT's may be considered;
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience overseeing the design and construction of significant civil infrastructure projects;
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities with ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities, and successfully problem solve and innovate when required;
  • Strong organization skills to clearly articulate complex technical challenges to non-technical internal and external stakeholders;
  • Field work and construction management experience including site recon, surveying, scoping, construction supervision and contract administration would be beneficial;
  • 1 to 3 years’ of railway experience with progressive responsibility in physical plant and structure maintenance and construction is desirable;
  • Familiarity with CP planning and appropriation process, CP standards & practices, Railway Operating Rules (CROR), Provincial/State and Federal regulations and other applicable railway related standards and regulations considered an asset;
  • Working knowledge of SAP, Windows XP, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, AutoCad, Civil 3D;
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills;

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CP. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
