The opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Environment Governance, Operations Services and Remediation, and located in the Airdrie office within the Rocky Mountain Region of Canada Gas Operations, the Environmental Specialist will be responsible for supporting daily operations and developing and managing environmental plans, activities and projects to ensure compliance with all federal and provincial environmental regulations, company policies, standards, management system and TC Energy procedures.  

 

The Environmental Specialist will provide environmental and planning expertise to various stakeholders including regional staff, corporate stakeholders, regulators and industry peers. 

 

What you'll do

In addition to supporting Rocky Mountain Region pipeline operations in Southern Alberta and Southeastern BC, the Environment Specialist will provide the following senior-level support:

  • Mentoring, training and directing Canada Gas Operations personnel to ensure environmental compliance, and provide field-friendly environmental support for onsite Operations staff 
  • Manage or support annual regional environmental activities as required: hazardous waste management, vegetation and noxious weed control, brushing, fugitive emissions, site water management, chemical inventories, etc.
  • Develop, track and forecast regional environmental budgets
  • Collaborate with internal environmental peers to align regional environmental work with corporate, Canada Gas Operations, Engineering and Projects and regional goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders (field operations, corporate and regulators) to identify and mitigate/manage environmental risks
  • Inspect facilities to ensure environmental compliance to company and regulatory standards and procedures
  • Active participation in Joint Health Safety and Environment Committee (JHSEC) and the regional Emergency Preparedness Team (EPT)
  • Complete external reporting as required (air emissions, soil quality, etc)
  • Lead or assist with environmental assessment, monitoring, remediation activities as required
  • Attend regional project pre-job meetings and review/provide feedback to ensure environmental hazards/risks are identified and controlled
  • Participate in audits where required, analyze findings and implement corrective actions 
  • Accompany all scheduled environmental regulator audits and inspections in the region, and ensure all findings are addressed
  • Provide Incident Command System (ICS) Environment Unit Leader (EUL) emergency response support in Rocky Mountain Region and across Canada Gas Operations
  • Review company operating procedures and processes; identify gaps, issue recommendations and track implementation
  • Provide regular updates to Environment and Regional Leadership
  • Assist or lead in company or regional environmental program roll outs
  • Actively participate in environmental associations and community engagement environmental initiatives
  • Role involves travel to facilities within region and other facilities, as required.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a University degree in Environmental or Geological Sciences or Engineering (or similar field of study)
  • Minimum 6 years of environmental/industry work experience is required
  • Knowledge of gas pipeline operations is expected in this role
  • Experience working with provincial and federal environmental regulatory agencies (Canadian Energy Regulator, Environmental Canada, Transport Canada and Health Canada), and knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory requirements.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8 years of combined applicable academic training, certification and related work experience
  • Relevant professional designation or certification
  • Gas sector experience 
  • ICS experience 
  • Advanced analytical ability to gather and evaluate complex information obtained from a variety of sources
  • A broad range of project management skills (planning, scheduling, budgeting, risk assessment and time management).
