| The Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario invites applications for the Cassels Brock Chair in Mining Law and Finance. This endowed position is funded by a donation by Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP, in the interests of promoting high-quality academic programming in the field. The Chair will conduct research and teaching related to the Canadian and global mining industry, including issues of sustainability, finance, environmental regulation, and relationships with Indigenous peoples. The Appointment may be a probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending on qualifications and experience. Candidates may also be considered for a Limited Term appointment, with rank to be determined by qualifications and experience. The position is available to begin on July 1, 2023, although alternate start dates may be arranged. The term for the Chair is five years, renewable. Western Law has a robust mining law program, including a suite of academic courses and experiential learning opportunities. For many years, we have welcomed internationally renowned scholars, practitioners, developers, government regulators, and NGO and Indigenous leaders to educate our students about important considerations at every stage of the mining cycle. Our students have multiple opportunities to interact with industry leaders and to engage in interdisciplinary projects with students in other Faculties. Most recently, Western Law students were part of an interdisciplinary team exploring potential options for asteroid mining as part of the Khepri Asteroid Mining Mission. Western Law is a member of The Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law and has an active presence at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate law students, establish a productive research program, and provide leadership in the Faculty of Law on programs related to mining law and finance. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to develop interdisciplinary projects with colleagues in other academic units, including Earth Science, Geography, Indigenous Studies, and the Ivey School of Business, as well as collaborations with the mining industry. | Education Requirements | Qualified applicants must have a JD, LLB, or equivalent degree, as well as a relevant advanced graduate degree or equivalent. Candidates considered for a probationary appointment must have a superior academic record and a demonstrated record of, or a strong potential for, excellence in scholarly research and teaching. In addition, they should have the ability and willingness to contribute to the intellectual and scholarly life of the faculty community and to the University more generally. Candidates considered for appointment with tenure must have an outstanding academic record with a strong record of publications in academic outlets and significant experience in teaching. Limited Term candidates should have some advanced education in law or a significant record of successful practice in fields relevant to mining law. |
