PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Engineer in Training (EIT) employee is responsible for developing an expertise in Track Design, Standards, and Welding. Track design and standards are critical at CP for all linear asset installation, maintenance, and repair. CP collects vast amounts of data to support these functions and a major responsibility of this position is to process these data to drive improvements. Another critical component in repairing track is welding. Welding processes at CP require detailed instructions and staff development through training. Understanding existing design, standards, and welding practices will be a short term component of the position and the employee is expected to use these understandings, available data sources, engineering analysis, and new technologies to drive process and standard improvements. A vision of technology integration to reduce risk for railway operations is strongly encouraged as this role develops. The employee will also need to participate in industry committees and work side by side with regulatory bodies such as Transport Canada, the Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop an expertise in design and track standards
  • Develop an expertise in welding and welding processes
  • Use data based on incident analysis such as, but not limited to derailments (both FRA and non-FRA) to drive improved designs working with the design team and documenting standards
  • Support the roll-out of welding training facilities by interacting with welding quality managers and the CP test department
  • Use engineering analysis to drive optimizing track designs and to ensure design safety
  • Drive business case developments for new technology purchases and/or process integrations to improve railway safety and efficiency;
  • Support continuous improvement of existing technology and further development of standards and processes;
  • Adhere to Canadian Pacific’s health and safety policy.

 

POSITION SKILLS:

  • Ability to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software;

  • Ability to perform engineer analysis using finite element software;

  • Ability to process large amounts of image data;

  • Ability to improve and support development of business rules, and/or incorporate new technologies to improve safety and operational efficiency;

  • Ability to record data and support calculations of accuracy and reliability statistics;

  • Ability and drive to drill down to determine root causes of incidents;

  • Ability to work on parallel projects;

  • Ability to work outside of defined scopes and diverse projects;

  • Willingness to learn and think outside the box;

  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal;

  • Desire to develop into a people leader.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have an Engineering degree from an accredited university in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace or similar discipline;
  • Must be registered as an Engineer in Training with APEGA or eligible for registration;
  • Must have experience with design and finite element modeling;
  • Track experience an asset;
  • Welding experience an asset;
  • Practical hands-on experience (automotive repair, robotics, furniture) an asset;
  • Operational environment experience drilling down and driving solutions an asset;
  • Ability to travel mostly to domestic locations and respond to calls occasionally after hours and on weekends;
  • Must be able to write clear and concise reports which will be distributed to high level management;
  • Must hold a full stage Class 5 driver’s permit;
  • Must hold a Canadian Passport with the ability to travel to the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Asia.

Management Conductor Program:
