PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The role will require use of operational data from mechanical locomotive, safety, and regulatory to support the development of a big data expert system. The role will work with a team of analysts, engineers and mechanics to address the root causes and create predictive solutions to address locomotive failures and locomotive operations.  The results of these analyses may also be used to enhance the expert system in order to improve safety, increase operational efficiency, perform preventative maintenance, create predictive models and assist in asset repair management strategies specifically relating to locomotives.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Support mechanical locomotive operations, troubleshooting, repair process and investigation.
  • Develop new business and operating rules based on locomotive data analysis, key findings and root causes drill down;
  • Create task lists, repair recommendation and other forms of direction to turn detected problems into actionable alerts
  • Assist in the development of an expert system including data collection, transmission, storage, analysis and user interface
  • Participate in shop training, operations, repair processes and troubleshooting of locomotives to better familiarize with shop practices.
  • Support business case developments for new technology purchases and/or process integrations based on data analysis results to improve mechanical reliability, railway safety and efficiency;
  • Coordinate the implementation and installation of such technologies.
  • Propose new processes and technologies to enhance investigation data retrieval and processing capabilities to increase productivity;
  • Define requirements and work with IT staff to incorporate all technological changes;
  • Utilize vast quantities of wayside detector, locomotive, operating, repair, and incident data sources to develop value adding machine learning models and processes.
  • Adhere to Canadian Pacific’s health and safety policy;
  • Support  weekend requests for immediate analysis.

 

POSITION SKILLS:

  • Ability to perform process large amounts of data;
  • Experience using data analytics programming languages such as Python, R, Matlab, Tensorflow, SQL
  • Experience with CAD, FEM or other mechanical modeling software
  • Ability to develop business rules, create machine learning models and incorporate these technologies into the business to improve safety and operational efficiency;
  • Ability and drive to drill down to determine root causes of service failure using data and in-shop investigations to implement corrective action efficiently;
  • Ability to support and independently manage multiple projects;
  • Ability to produce requirements for existing IT systems such that they can be improved;
  • Willingness to learn how to submit Investment Funding Requests to improve systems and purchase new technologies which increase productivity;
  • Willingness to cross-train and learn multiple field positions to enhance qualifications;

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must hold a Bachelors/Masters/ or PHD degree in the engineering, mathematical, or computer science fields from an accredited college or university;
  • Must be able to write clear and concise reports which will be distributed to high level management;
  • Experience with engines and large machinery
  • Background in mechanical systems
  • Experience with data analytics software such as:
  • Must have a minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in industry implementing data mining and machine learning concepts OR evidence of school project work in data analysis;
  • Must hold a full stage Class 5 driver’s permit;
  • Must hold a Canadian Passport;
  • Must be eligible to register as an EIT, P.Eng or other education specific applicable designations;
  • Must be willing to travel up to 20% annually and is eligible to travel to the United States and Mexico.
