The BC Wildfire Service is a unique area of government tasked with the responsibility of preventing, managing and suppressing unwanted wildfire on the landscape. Approximately 1600 field workers - comprising technical experts, strategic thinkers and fire operations staff - are dedicated to undertaking the BCWS mandate in delivering effective wildfire management and emergency response support to protect life and values at risk, encouraging sustainable, healthy and resilient ecosystems.
The Predictive Services Unit is a multidisciplinary team within Wildfire Operations. The team consists of fire behaviour, fire weather and technology specialists who develop innovative products and services that can be utilized by other teams for their programs as well as during emergency operations (e.g Prevention and Operations). The Predictive Services Unit also: sets province-wide priorities for the fire weather and behaviour programs; oversees investment, training and education of staff and end-users; develops staff capability and capacity through working groups; sets priorities for research and development; manages the fire weather network; and ensures the technology platform for the Predictive Services Unit program is secure and reliable.
As the Lead Fire Weather Forecaster, you will be a senior professional providing expertise, leadership and direction on the analysis and interpretation of meteorological data related to fire weather forecasting to support decision making during emergency events. You will also lead the research, development and implementation of new fire weather forecasting techniques and tools to optimize forecasting capabilities within BC Wildfire Service for the diverse geography and changing climate of British Columbia.

Qualifications for this role include:
• BSc degree in Meteorology; or qualification as an Operational Meteorologist through a recognized educational institute; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum three (3) years supervision experience
• Demonstrated experience in program and/or project management/ leadership.
Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in weather forecasting and presentation experience
• Demonstrated experience tailoring forecast to specific client needs.
• Preference for working knowledge of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS)
• Preference may be given to candidates who have completed of S-490 /Advanced Wildland Fire Behaviour or equivalent.
• Valid Class 5 drivers licence.
Salary$72,724.97 - $83,014.85 annually plus 3-Grid Temporary Market Adjustment
