Description

Wilson College of Leadership and Civic Engagement (the College) is a newly formed collaborative academic unit between the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University. The College, under development, merges the rich academic heritage of McMaster University with innovative education & research in leadership and civic engagement. With plans to offer Canada's only Combined Honours Bachelor of Arts in Leadership & Civic Studies and Another Subject, Wilson College is dedicated to developing ethical leaders capable of shaping a positive and sustainable future for Canada and beyond. Our unique living-learning community will foster a dynamic environment for intellectual growth and societal impact, embodying our commitment to inclusive excellence and civic engagement. The first cohort for this program is expected for Fall 2025.

The College is looking to hire a Recruitment Officer who will oversee and lead all recruitment activities for the College. The ideal candidate will be a creative, confident, and outgoing individual who will thrive on communicating and engaging with high school students, parents, and guidance counsellors. This role will be cruical to the growth and evolution of the College's academic programming, and the ideal candidate will enthusastically embrace the College's novelty by introducing innovative ideas and perspectives. They will represent Wilson College at various events on and off-campus, and work in collaboration with recruitment staff in Humanities & Social Sciences, as well as the Office of the Registrar. Travel for this position can be expected and a valid G license is required.

This position will initially be a limited two-year role, with the possbility of extension.

General Description

Responsible for attracting high school applicants to the College through a variety of centralized recruitment efforts, programs, and initiatives. Develop and deliver strategies and policies that serve to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the College’s strategic recruiting initiatives as well has helping the College meet target enrollments.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop creative methods for raising the profile of the College’s undergraduate programs and experiential education opportunities in the media.
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate a marketing plan for annual recruitment activities ensuring the image and reputation of the University is maintained.
  • Complete an annual needs assessment and write business plan which includes the development of recruitment, and strategic plans and objectives.
  • Research and conduct analysis of comparable educational systems domestically and internationally.
  • Develop conceptual plans and budgets for projects related to recruitment and experiential education.
  • Monitor and reconcile accounts, prepares financial statements, calculates program costs, travel expenses.
  • Negotiate terms and prices with external and internal suppliers for services, supplies, promotional materials, and equipment.
  • Implement projects and ensures adequate staffing and deadlines are met.
  • Develop and facilitate information sessions to potential students, families, guidance counsellors, and university staff and faculty.
  • Meet and respond to inquiries from potential students, parents, guidance counsellors, faculty and staff.
  • Attend education fairs across Ontario to promote and recruit to programs and represent the College.
  • Develop and implement a competitive and comprehensive campus visit program.
  • Plan and coordinate various University recruitment events and campus-wide activities including scheduling faculty, staff and students to provide coverage for the various events and ensures they have received the appropriate training and recruitment materials.
  • Develop estimates of time and resources required for a variety of events and activities.
  • Create, monitor, and update website and promotional materials.
  • Participate in national and international listservs with recruiting staff to discuss and share information on issues, policies, and admission criteria.
  • Update and manage various information databases.
  • Create reports that assist in the development of recommendations for policy changes, and target audience’s perception that are submitted to senior management for review.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and safeguarding of student files and information.
  • Remain current with frequent changes in all academic areas, programs, admission policies and procedures, electronic media, and social networking.
  • Design and deliver training materials and sessions to temporary staff regarding recruitment.
  • Remain current on the recruitment strategies of competing institutions and well as strategies to enhance Experiential education.

  • Advanced writing, editing, presentation, and content development skills will be prioritized.
  • Demonstrated understanding of post-secondary domestic and international undergraduate recruitment & marketing.
  • Strong analytical research skills and the ability to use market research information strategically to improve and enhance communications to target audiences.
  • Deep commitment to inclusive excellence and fostering the College's mandate to recruit a diverse cohort of students.
  • Knowledge and experience in relevant software (e.g. Microsoft 365, Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, etc.) is considered a strong asset.

Supervision

  • Provide lead hand supervision and is responsible for the quality and quantity of work of others.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study (preferably from McMaster)
  • 3 years of relevant marketing, communication, or public relations experience
