The opportunity

The Wood Buffalo Area is seeking an experienced technician in the Measurement and Controls fields, who is self-motivated and seeking to expand their technical expertise and knowledge. You will report to the Wood Buffalo Area Manager and apply your skills and aptitude to repair, install, troubleshoot, and perform other planned maintenance and corrective tasks. You will work on assigned electronic, electrical, pneumatic and/or mechanical control systems, devices, and ancillary equipment. The focus will be on the support and maintenance of gas pipeline measurement systems such as; dew point testers, H2S Analyzers, Gas Chromatographs and Flow computers. You will also support the operation and maintenance of natural gas compression facilities and compression functions such as electrical switch gear, electric motors, gas turbines, pumps, valves, and auxiliary equipment.

 

The position will be based out of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

 

*The regular work schedule for this position will be:

Week 1 - Monday to Thursday 9 hours / day; Friday is an 8 hour / day

Week 2 - Monday to Thursday 9 hours / day; Friday is a Regular Day Off (RDO)

 

*This position is overtime eligible, part of an on-call rotation and may be requested to provide support during emergency response incidents or extended days due to operational needs, as required 

 

What you’ll do

  • Ensure facilities and personnel comply with the Company's Community, Safety and Environment policies and procedures as well as accepted risk standards
  • Perform installation, testing, repair and maintenance on natural gas pipeline facilities, as well as other associated equipment used in gas transmission
  • Troubleshoot, test, & maintain gas measurement systems, dew points, gas chromatographs, flow computers, H2S Analyzers, valves, transmitters, RTDs
  • Conduct routine regular maintenance and regulatory inspections at natural gas facilities
  • Troubleshoot, test, & maintain shutdown devices, fire & gas systems, auxiliary systems, UPS devices, control valves, PLC’s & control systems
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems utilizing technical reference manuals and documents
  • Complete all administrative functions related to position and duties
  • Maintain core operational task qualifications
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and training to other personnel
  • Demonstrate safety leadership
  • Lead/manage the safe and efficient completion of low / medium complexity projects with demonstrated and effective work management practices such as time management, work sequencing, and contractor oversight
  • Collaborate and support our business partners as required

 
This position requires manual dexterity and visual acuity as well as the ability to:

  • Lift, pull, push, and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of physical energy
  • Stand, walk, kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods of time
  • Twist head and back for extended periods of time
  • Work in areas classified as confined space
  • Climb and work from ladders, catwalks, staging, and platforms
  • Ascend and descend slopes and ditches
  • Work with hands above head
  • Work lying on back
  • Work in adverse weather and/or varying temperature conditions

 
Minimum Qualifications

  • A fully certified Journeyman Electrician or Instrument Technician
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience
  • An alternate combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Willing to relocate or currently reside in Fort McMurray, AB

 
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with natural gas custody transfer measurement
  • Previous experience with high pressure natural gas piping, valves and operations
  • Additional industry related certification and/or related trades experience
  • Computerized Maintenance Management System and SAP experience
  • Experience with the interpretation of technical reference documents
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Highly motivated and well-organized in the execution of responsibilities
  • Able to act and work independently and able to effectively work in a team environment that includes shared responsibilities in support of team and company objectives
  • Action oriented with a focus on completing tasks and assignments in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, ensuring proper handling and disposition of hazardous waste
  • Continuous improvement mindset in applying your knowledge to efficiently perform duties as assigned
  • Experience in leading subcontractors and able to coordinate and monitor work activities
  • Experience or exposure to Prime Contractor management and oversight of activities
  • Able to collaborate and work with community members such as landowners, county, and Indigenous and other partners
  • Demonstrated effective written & verbal communication skills
  • A willingness to work in all areas required by the team
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills when encountering issues and able to use these skills when troubleshooting
  • Competent using equipment applicable to the maintenance of control and measurement systems
  • Current with technological advances in the gas pipeline field
  • Utilize computers, smart phone, and e-mail for internal and external communication, record keeping, on-line reporting, material and supply ordering and filing of various forms

 
*This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid class 5 Driver's License
  • Provide a driver's abstract for review
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing
  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home
