The Department of Oncology at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences are seeking two exceptional Academic Medical Oncologists specializing in gastrointestinal, lung, or head and neck cancers. A special interest or expertise in developmental therapeutics (Phase 1 trials) will be considered for one of the two positions. Successful candidates will hold a full-time academic appointment in the Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University.

Among the top 40 universities in the world for health and medicine, McMaster University is a globally renowned institution of higher learning and a research community committed to advancing human and societal health and well-being. The Department of Oncology provides rewarding opportunities for innovation and excellence in clinical care, education and research.

The Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) is a large academic cancer centre located adjacent to the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario and serves the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant region. The Division of Medical Oncology consists of 23 full-time medical oncologists who are engaged in clinical practice, education and research. Members of the Division provide approximately 3,800 new systemic therapy consultations per year. The program treats all major disease sites and is a tertiary referral centre for sarcoma, central nervous system tumors, gynaecological oncology and bone marrow transplantation.

As academic medical oncologists, successful candidates are expected to contribute to clinical service, research and educational activities in their primary areas of focus and in a second disease site. Disease sites of interest include gynaecological malignancies, sarcoma and genitourinary cancers. These disease site groups have strong clinical trials programs and are represented in respective provincial disease site activities. Successful candidates will participate in the medical oncology on-call roster and the ward consultation service for the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. A hospitalist program as MRP exists for the daily management of oncology inpatients. Members of the Division of Medical Oncology are expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate educational activities within the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and the Medical Oncology Residency Training Program. The Medical Oncology Residency Training Program is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The JCC has a large Clinical Trials Department contributing to Phase 1 to 3 clinical trials through the Canadian Clinical Trials Group, the Ontario Clinical Oncology Group, industry-sponsored trials and investigator-initiated clinical trials. Academic faculty are expected to actively participate in the clinical trials program. Multiple opportunities exist for clinical, health services and translational research. The academic Department of Oncology is closely aligned with the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute (ECRI), working collaboratively to provide access to clinical, translational and health services researchers.

Candidates are expected to possess the following:

  • Certificate of registration for a valid license to practice in the province of Ontario issued by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
  • FRCP in Internal Medicine with subspecialty training in Medical Oncology, or equivalent qualifications
  • Membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association, or equivalent

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be considered first. To comply with the Government of Canada’s reporting requirements, the University is obliged to gather information about applicants’ status as either Permanent Residents of Canada or Canadian citizens. Applicants need not identify their country of origin or current citizenship; however, all applications must include one of the following statements: Yes, I am a citizen or permanent resident of Canada - or - No, I am not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
