The Department of Oncology in the Faculty of Health Sciences is a research-intensive department comprised of nearly 60 full-time faculty members, many who lead and collaborate on cutting-edge clinical trials, health services and translational research. Local assets that foster innovation and impact nationally and internationally include the Coordination and Methods Centre for the Ontario Clinical Oncology Group (OCOG), as well as the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute (ECRI), a joint McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences research institute focused on interdisciplinary research that benefits and improves the lives of people affected by cancer.

The biostatistics unit within the Department of Oncology provides statistical and methodological support for clinical trials in cancer, venous thrombosis and surgery, conducted by OCOG, ECRI and other collaborating departments in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, together with our partner hospitals.

 

We are seeking an enthusiastic (bio)statistician to join our biostatistics unit to support high quality, multi-centre clinical trials. The opportunity will include contributing to design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong applied research methodology and programming skills, and a background in health research and/or epidemiology to support collaborative clinical trials research.





Job Summary:
Responsible for the application of complex statistical and technical skills toward the collection, analysis, and translation of statistical data for a variety of research projects. Conducts statistical research and analysis and compiles and interprets statistical records and reports for a variety of research projects. Works under general direction within a clear framework of accountability and exercises substantial personal responsibility and accountability to deliver results. Provides lead hand supervision to other staff.

Purpose and Key Functions:
• Apply established statistical methods and techniques to analyze and interpret data.
• Identify the appropriate method of statistical analysis and apply statistical techniques to interpret data.
• Compile and analyze data and interpret trends, fluctuations, and other changes that may emerge.
• Develop forms and procedures required for the collection and compilation of data.
• Oversee the design and maintenance of databases, data collection forms, error checking methods, and related programs for collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Design database specifications and modify existing software packages to meet specific research project needs.
• Document new designs, codes, and modifications.
• Develop test cases and test system upgrades and enhancements.
• Write sections of scientific papers, funding proposals, grants, and abstracts.
• Conduct data audits, compile results, analyze and summarize audit findings.
• Coordinate and manage the collection, delivery, entry, verification, analysis, and reporting of data.
• Provide advice regarding data collection and analysis required for research projects.
• Recommend modifications to processes related to data collection and data entry conventions and develop implementation plans.
• Apply specialized knowledge and scientific principles to review, critically appraise and interpret published literature.
• Research pertinent literature in a designed project area and analyze the applicability of the concepts.
• Develop and deliver presentations and training sessions.

Supervision:
Provide lead hand supervision and is responsible for the quality and quantity of work of others.

Requirements:
• Master’s degree in Statistics or related field of study.
• Requires 3 years of relevant experience.


Assets:
• Strong applied statistical and programming skills in R and/or SAS and previous experience with large databases.
• Proficiency with statistical methods and applications in clinical trials research.
• Prior experience in the healthcare field in clinical and applied research.
• Ability to clearly communicate (written and oral) methdological and statistical issues and concepts.
• Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Abilility to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and timelines.
