The Opportunity

TC Energy has an exciting career opportunity as a Senior Welding Engineer on the Welding & Materials Engineering team. In this role you would work within of team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the areas of pipeline welding, materials, coatings and NDE to contribute to the company's position as a world-class leader in the design, construction and operation of pipeline & energy facilities.

 

Reporting to the Manager of Welding & Materials Engineering Canada Gas, you will be primarily responsible for providing welding engineering support to a wide variety of pipeline, facility and maintenance projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective compliance with TC Energy requirements. You will also have opportunities to support the continuous improvement of TC Energy technical specifications and work processes while developing collaborative relationships with team members, contractors and suppliers. What you’ll do

  • Provide welding engineering support to a wide variety of new construction and maintenance projects including pipelines, facilities and shop fabrications.
  • Develop TC Energy welding procedure specifications as required. Select TC Energy welding procedure specifications for project use.
  • Support the development of new and existing TC Energy technical specifications related to welding.
  • Support qualification and auditing of new and existing welding contractors and suppliers.
  • Review and approve third-party welding procedure specifications and welding-related technical specifications to ensure that TC Energy supplementary requirements are applied.
  • Provide upfront welding engineering support to projects through document reviews and pre-production meetings.
  • Issue welding-related technical documentation and memos to projects as required.
  • Support RFI and NCR processes to ensure contractor and supplier compliance with TC Energy requirements.
  • Provide troubleshooting support during execution of new construction and maintenance projects.
  • Collaborate with TC Energy team members including other engineers and technologists to develop effective solutions to technical challenges. Support the documentation and consistent application of TC Energy requirements.
  • Collaborate with welding contractors and suppliers, procurement, and project teams to find practical solutions to technical challenges and to identify opportunities to improve technical requirements and processes.
  • Conduct and support welding-related engineering assessments.
  • Support failure analysis and root cause investigations as required.
  • Provide technical expertise and information in response to Regulatory requests

 
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Metallurgical/Materials, Mechanical Engineering or Welding Engineering (an alternate combination of experience and education may also be considered)
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in a welding engineering role supporting the design and construction of oil and gas pipelines and facilities
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is required (an alternate combination of experience and education may also be considered)
  • Experienced in the application of welding requirements according to CSA Z662 and ASME IX
  • General knowledge of common non-destructive examination techniques and their applications
  • Demonstrated analytical and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated technical writing and oral communication skills, with a strong attention to detail

 
Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical background in metallurgical materials or mechanical engineering including knowledge of and experience with the design, construction, and maintenance of oil and gas pipelines
  • A strong background in materials properties, effects of fabrication methods on material properties, fracture mechanics analysis on fracture initiation and propagation control
  • Experience with mechanized welding procedures for mainline welding and fabrication welding
  • Experience with other design and welding standards (e.g. ASME B31.3, ASME B31.4, ASME B31.8, ASME VIII, CSA B51, API 1104, CSA W59)
  • Field experience with construction practices to prevent problems such as hydrogen-induced cracking
  • Experience with in-service welding procedures and maintenance practices
  • Experience in dealing with Regulatory and Compliance issues
  • Experience in industrial failure analyses and root cause investigations including various mechanisms of mechanical and corrosion/erosion failures would be an asset
  • Adaptability to a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and challenges

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license

  • Must have the ability and be willing to travel to supplier’s locations in North America and abroad
  • Be available for extended work hours outside of standard business hours, and call-outs as needed
  • Travel to other locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training which would involve overnight stays away from home (up to 15%)
