About the Curator in Residence

Launching in the Fall of 2023 the School of the Arts (SOTA) at McMaster in collaboration with the McMaster Museum of Art, and the Art Gallery of Hamilton will host a Curator in Residence for a period of 8 months (September to April). The residency invites an emerging or mid-career curator to work on the McMaster campus to mentor students on curatorial practices and to teach collaboratively in our Certificate in Critical Curatorial Studies. The Curator should be committed to equity, diversity and inclusion in their curatorial practice and engage with anti-oppressive and decolonized frameworks. We are particularly interested in site specific and socially-engaged practices in addition to more conventional curatorial practices.

The Curator in Residence will engage students in our Certificate in Critical Curatorial Studies to develop a curatorial project and to learn to write curatorial texts. Additionally, the Curator in Residence will work with SOTA students to curate a selection of student work for campus exhibitions and a minimum of 1 studio critique per term (2 total). Other options might include in class visits and public outreach through talks or museum tours.
