Salary: $16.55 per hour

Hours: 35 hours/week

Status: Full-time, Temporary (3-month contract)

Position Summary

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking two summer students to join the medicinal chemistry team in the Drug Discovery Program. The successful candidates will design and synthesize small molecules to accelerate the development of novel anti-cancer therapeutics. The Drug Discovery Program helps translate the most promising ideas coming from Ontario's academic community into therapeutic benefits to cancer patients by identifying hits and lead molecules and optimizing them to potential drug candidates.

Based in Toronto, you will be a part of a dedicated team of scientists to identify and optimize new anti-cancer drug candidates using various synthetic chemistry methods. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary drug discovery team, consisting of computational chemists, ADME scientists, and biologists, to perform structure-activity relationships.

This position is temporary, full-time for 3 months.

Position Responsibilities

Perform synthetic organic chemistry experiments using a variety of methods.
Purify compounds using various purification techniques.
Analyze and characterize intermediates and final compounds.
Maintain records of experimental procedures and data.
Assist in compound management, including compound registration, storage, dispensing, and database management as needed.
Liaise effectively with multi-disciplinary team members (medicinal, analytical and computational chemists and biologists).
Adhere to all OICR safety guidelines and policies, strongly advocate safety to others.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in an undergraduate chemistry program.
Excellent knowledge of organic chemistry.
Experience working in a synthetic organic chemistry lab performing multi-step reactions.
Experience with NMR, HPLC, and MS techniques to identify and characterize small molecule compounds.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong team player and excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge of and ability to adhere to workplace safety guidelines and policies and act as a positive example to peers.
