Toronto Metropolitan University's School of Early Childhood Studies provides leading undergraduate and graduate programs contributing to the advancement of the quality of life for all children and families. The Opportunity

The Supervisor, Early Learning Centre oversees and leads the day to day operations of the Early Learning Centre (ELC), including the development and implementation of short and long term objectives for the ELC, in consultation with the Manager, Community Programs and Director, Early Childhood Studies. The Supervisor ensures policies and program implementation are consistent with the ELC, School of ECS and the University's goals and objectives, and promotes and models positive interactions with multiple stakeholders. This position directly supervises and provides leadership to the Registered Early Childhood Educators, and supports staff to ensure compliance and quality of the program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leads a culture of community practice and excellence by ensuring the ELC offers innovative and research based pedagogy.
  • Manages and supervises full-time and part-time Registered Early Childhood Educators and staff and ensures they are in compliance with governing bodies.
  • Manages the budget, purchases and financial administration. 
  • Creates, approves and oversees staff schedules and ensures compliance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, including timesheets, vacation requests, overtime entry and absence coverage.
  • Maintains enrollment of children and ensures the centre operates at full capacity.
  • Manages and facilitates the Family Advisory Committee.
  • Ensures the ELC website pages are up to date, relevant and reflects the ELC's pedagogical practices.
  • Participates in committees to ensure knowledge of compliance and policy changes.
  • Creates and maintains a partnership with the School of ECS faculty.
  • Schedules ECS student access to the program for field education, observations, research and course projects.
  • Collaborates with faculty to facilitate their program of research.
  • Conducts tours of the centre and plans and participates in family socials.
  • Must be flexible to work beyond regular working hours, including evenings and/or weekends as required.

Qualifications

To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary degree in Early Childhood Studies or related degree and an Early Childhood Education Diploma. 
  • Must be a Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) and member of the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE) in good standing.
  • Minimum five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in early childhood education and childcare, including two (2) years of experience supervising staff preferably in a unionized environment and financial/budget management. 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong leadership skills with excellent motivational and team-building skills.
  • Experience maintaining staff schedules and ensuring ratios are maintained at all times as per the CCEYA (2018).
  • Experience creating reports, policies, manuals, and curriculum frameworks.
  • Experience with implementing Toronto Public Health's Infection Prevention and Control in Child Care Requirements and Best Practices and the Ministry of Education's operational guidance for child care during COVID-19 Outbreak.
  • Strong financial and analytical skills and experience managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated capacity and commitment to engage and communicate with families, children, faculty, staff, and students.
  • A clear criminal reference and vulnerable sector check, Standard First Aid and CPR (Level C), and up-to-date immunizations and TB test are required.
  • In-depth knowledge of child development, learning and curriculum theory, assessment and observation techniques; Child Care and Early Years Act, City of Toronto Early Learning and
  • Care Assessment for Quality Improvement, Ministry of Education's early learning documents, and CECE's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience with principles of equity, diversity and inclusion to build a campus community inclusive of Ryerson's diverse population.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability.
