Office of the General Counsel and Board Secretariat (GCBS)


As a group of professionals with expertise in governance, legal services, and information access and privacy, the staff of the Office of the General Counsel and Board Secretariat (GCBS) play a key strategic role in safeguarding and upholding the reputation of the University. The GCBS advises and assists the Board of Governors and the University on legal issues, policies, governance, privacy, compliance, records management, and risk management. 



The Opportunity

The GCBS is looking for a Risk and Insurance Specialist who will:

  • Manage the University's insurance and loss prevention program and ensure the program is administered in a responsible and cost-effective manner. 
  • Work closely with both the General Counsel, Secretary of the Board of Governors, and Chief Privacy Officer ("General Counsel") and the Chief Financial Officer ("CFO") to ensure a proactive approach to risk management.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the University's reciprocal insurance exchange program (including property, commercial and general liability), wrap around coverage insurance and loss prevention program
  • Provide risk advisory services by reviewing contracts, proposed new construction and facilities and/or new university activities for risk allocation, loss and insurance implications
  • Provide information and guidance on insurance coverage to the University community and respond to all enquiries relating to insurance policies, liability, and coverage; provide insurance information sessions to the University community, including analysis on insurance, indemnity and liability issues for legal contracts and agreements.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary degree program in Commerce, Business Administration or related field
  • Diploma in Insurance (ie. Insurance Institute of Ontario) preferred 
  • A minimum of 5 years of related work experience in a risk management insurance or related environment with knowledge and application of insurance regulations, practices and procedures
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Strong negotiating skills to determine the best insurance coverage and premiums
  • Strong investigative and analytical skills
  • Solid oral and written communication skills for report writing, creating manuals, creating and delivering presentations
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, employees, managers and senior leadership
  • Strong administrative skills to organize meetings and prioritize assigned tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting practices and procedures 
  • Excellent time-management skills and the ability to prioritize and ensure completion of work
  • Strong attention to detail in document management, correspondence, and database management
  • Ability to work independently and also as an effective team member
  • Strong proficiency in computers and various software application packages (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, Microsoft Project, e-mail, PowerPoint, Google Apps, CRM software, etc)
