About Facilities Management and Development

Toronto Metropolitan University’s Facilities Management and Development (FMD) department involves care of the physical environment of the campus and strategic planning for existing and future spaces, including the impacts of those spaces. FMD is responsible for functions including Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Services, Maintenance and Operations, Planning and Development, Project Management Office, Real Estate, and Sustainability.



The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Electrician / Fire Alarm Technician to join our team! This is a full-time permanent position. As an Electrician / Fire Alarm Technician, you will maintain the fire alarm and electrical systems of the University in a safe, efficient, organized and
serviceable operating condition on a continuing basis. You will be committed to providing excellent client service to staff, faculty, students and the Toronto Metropolitan University community.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs preventative, demand and corrective maintenance of fire alarm and electrical
  • Systems. Inspecting, troubleshooting, repair, logs data and service fire-alarm and electrical systems complying with/meet all applicable standards, codes and regulations of the NFPA, Ontario Fire Code, CSA/ Ontario Hydro Electrical Systems.
  • Read and interpret specifications and drawings for building electrical services and fire
  • alarm systems and electrical/fire alarm code specifications to determine wiring layout for
  • new and/or existing installations.
  • Undertakes a comprehensive preventative maintenance program and ensures that proper
  • maintenance cycles are maintained and reported to the supervisor.
  • Keeps up-to-date with changing technology and techniques that are pursuant to the trade.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a capable Fire Alarm Technician and licensed Journeyman Electrician (construction and maintenance), performing fire alarm system maintenance, preferably with extensive experience in Edwards and Simplex fire alarm panels and related equipment.
  • Successful completion of a current Ontario Fire Alarm Technicians Certificate and a current Journeyman Electrician license, both in construction and maintenance.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills and ability to use handheld communication devices are required.
  • Electrical maintenance and repair experience in a complex industrial, commercial or
  • institutional facility with low voltage and 13.8 kV substations. Switchgear,
  • transformers, circuit breakers, panels, buss and wire distribution systems extending from
  • 24V to 600V AC single and three-phase services for a wide range of equipment including
  • fan motors, variable frequency drives, furnaces, electronic equipment, synchronized
  • clock systems, fire alarm and enunciator systems, security surveillance systems and a
  • variety of electronic/electric or electro-pneumatic control systems of the heating and
  • ventilation systems.
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specification,
  • software/systems, schematics and operational /product manuals.
  • Working knowledge of the National and Ontario Fire Codes, and the NFPA, CSA and
  • Ontario Hydro Electrical Systems recommended practices.
  • Working knowledge of all computerized HVAC panels, computerized lighting systems, WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to prioritize the order in which work orders are completed is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Additional Requirements:

Ability to work in undesirable and disagreeable conditions such as dust, dirt, fumes, extreme temperatures (excessive cold or heat) and potential hazards, etc.
Must be capable of heavy lifting and other strenuous physical activity such as: continuous walking; standing; kneeling; climbing ladders; working on the back, sides and above shoulder for extended periods of time; working in confined spaces; working on scaffolds, air lifts or elevated equipment.
Must be willing and able to wear and use personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing.
Must demonstrate a record of attendance, reliability and dependability.
