Job Summary


The Library Technician is responsible for delivering information services such as acquisitions, cataloguing, serial management, and Information Desk reference work.

  • Provide service to clients by discussing, analyzing and determining the exact nature of their needs and objectives, using various internal/external systems and databases.
  • Analyze open information holdings such as books, electronic documents, DVDs, websites, etc., create and maintain accurate cataloguing records in the online integrated library system according to the international, national and local standards.
  • Liaise with suppliers regarding the acquisitions of either priced or free publications in all formats - electronic, multimedia, and print by evaluating, deciding and completing the acquisition transactions.
  • Administer the delivery of external open source information by troubleshooting the conversion to be compatible with the corporate systems and databases prior to downloading in various file formats to be imported to the corporate system.
  • Create and monitor loan and serial control records in the circulation database by performing client registration, check-in, check-out, renewal, overdue, damaged or lost internal/external library material and by sending messages to the intranet page for missing items.
  • Respond to special requests for materials required from external institutions by determining locations of documents, contacting other libraries, and identifying the appropriate format to be borrowed and delivered (e.g. print, fax,electronic, etc).
  • Establish and maintain procedures by providing guidance/training to colleagues.

Education


  • Community College Library and Information Technology Diploma and two (2) years related experience*

The educational program must be from an accredited learning institution recognized in Canada.

If you completed a program outside of Canada, you will be required to obtain proof of a Canadian equivalency at your expense through a recognized credential assessment service.

Note: Any higher level of education in a related field could be recognized as experience.


Experience


* Experience as a Library Technician or Information Specialist in a library, records management, or information centre environment.

Candidates must also possess:

  • Two (2) years' experience working in a client services environment
  • Experience in the use of library or information or records management automated systems.

Conditions of Employment


Lifting of heavy items may be required (boxes of files, equipment, under 10 kg)

A written exam will be administered. The exam will serve to evaluate your rigour, judgment and basic technical knowledge as it relates to the position.
