Innovation and technology adoption are important tools in our safety and efficiency efforts and we were the first to introduce autonomous haul system (AHS) technology into oil sands mining.  Over the next five years, we expect to deploy more than 150 autonomous haul trucks, through a phased implementation, which will be one of the largest investments in electric autonomous vehicles in the world.

As a Superintendent, you will be responsible for ensuring AHS Operations at Our Fort Hills Mine Site are operated in a safe and efficient way.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Lead AHS mine plan delivery and production and influence production optimization
  • Ensure area access controls are strictly adhered to and entry is restricted to essential personnel only
  • Ensure emergency preparedness plans are understood and adhered to
  • Work closely with shift trainers to ensure skill sets and training requirements are being met
  • Provide area authority and operational risk management of AHS operating footprint while on shift
  • Direct leadership and performance management oversight for AHS field and dispatch supervisors
  • Collaborate with functional peers (i.e. mine planning, maintenance, EHS) to drive business results
  • Provide back-up to the departmental manager position

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 15 years of experience in relation to mining operations with a minimum of five years in a leadership capacity (superintendent/supervisory)
  • A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with a continuous improvement attitude
  • Effective leadership skills with the ability to engage and encourage front line employees in a positive manner; you hold yourself and others accountable
  • A proven ability to effectively handle risk, change and the capacity to make sound and timely decisions aligned with Suncor goals and values
  • Strong working knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and a deep understanding of loss management techniques
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Previous experience working in a start-up mining operation or new technology deployment
  • Knowledge of mining dispatch systems and support applications
  • Experience in an Autonomous Haulage System Mine

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our camp-based Fort Hills mining site, located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a 7 days on /7 days off rotation (7 days on, 7 days off, 7  nights on, 7 nights off; 12-hour shifts)
  • This position is safety sensitive
