We are looking to hire a collaborative self-starter with an electrical background to join our transmission and distribution relay protection technical team. You will provide expertise in the management of protective relaying, control and energy management systems and equipment.

 

You will use your expertise to:

  • Provide support and input to ensure safe, efficient, and successful operation of our electrical assets ranging from 13.8kV to 260kV
  • Perform expertise in the monitoring and management of all relay protection and metering devices for substation and T&D assets (>13.8kV)
  • Participate in incident loss prevention investigations, HAZOPS and job safety analysis
  • Assist and provide guidance in the cleaning, testing, calibration of our protection intelligent electronic devices (IED), and functional operational testing of all protection schemes
  • Troubleshoot activities in the event of a system occurrence
  • Manage testing equipment calibration records and ensure all associated protection and control documentation are in good order to ensure protection device testing is accurate and reliable in the power system
  • Execute or assist with all test procedures of substation auxiliary equipment and verification of the operating center data systems
  • Be the point of contact to assist and to resolve questions about the protection devices application  installations

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of technical and hands on experience in a utility based environment working with protective relays and systems
  • Three years of experience in oil and gas or a related industry
  • An electrical engineering technologist diploma with a focus/specialization in power systems or electrical engineering degree
  • Strong electrical trouble shooting and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of electrical circuit fundamentals and various IED models from manufacturers such as SEL, GE Multilin, Areva/GEC Alstom etc.
  • Computer proficiency in SAP, the Microsoft Office suite and drafting tools such as AutoCAD would prove beneficial
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

  • The ability to anticipate potential problems and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions, as well as having a strong sense of accountability
  • A zero-tolerance for shortcuts, and if the procedure is incorrect, you fix it

Preference for:

  • A Journeyman Power System Electrician Certificate, attach your Journeyman ticket with your application
  • Knowledge and experience with IED secondary injection testing equipment such as Omicron or Manta
  • Experience working as relay specialist 

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
  • The shift schedule is a 5 days on /4 days off/ 5 days on rotation followed by 5 days off / 4 days on / 5 days off rotation
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • This position is security sensitive which requires you to clear a criminal history check
