In this role, you will supervise and coordinate the production, maintenance, unit technical support, budgeting control and overall efficient operation of the production area in a safe, environmentally acceptable and reliable manner. As the line manager, you will also be responsible for selection, development and training of personnel engaged in operating the assets. You will lead a large team of employees and embedded contractors (approximately 120 per shift) and will be responsible for all employee relations components.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Manage the physical assets and human resources function to meet the area’s business objectives including the annual production plan
  • Ensure that the assets are operated within defined reliability and process safety envelopes
  • Manage annual budgetary and planning responsibility for all aspects of the area operations
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained and maintenance work is effectively prioritized and executed, including required support and direction on turnaround activities
  • Own the capital portfolio for the area and make sure that we support the projects group to effectively integrate and deliver new assets
  • Ensure risks are appropriately assessed, managed, and escalated consistent with the Site Risk Escalation Protocol
  • Make sure that all work performed in your assigned area is in compliance with our health, safety and environment practices and policies and in accordance with applicable employment and environmental legislation
  • Ensure quality operator training and qualification procedures / tests are developed and maintained with support of the Operations Engineer, Operations Superintendent and Training Coordinator

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 10 years of experience in oil sands operations, maintenance, and engineering practices and procedures
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field with a solid background in operations and/or engineering
  • A deep understanding of the operating units in the processing area, and their impact on the whole business area operation, in order to maximize oil sands profitability
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Proven leadership skills, and the ability to motivate others
  • Strong analytical decision-making and communication skills to deal with people, equipment and process problems that can cause major impacts on the oil sands business
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple and changing priorities under tight deadlines with strong decision-making skills
  • Solid leadership and communication skills to interact with all functions and levels of leadership
  • Understand complex processes, and strive to develop and implement continuous improvement and creative process enhancements

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our camp-based Fort Hills mining site, located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a 4 days on / 3 days off rotation
  • This position is safety sensitive
