Job Overview

Are you passionate about drilling? Would you like to be a part of the mine geotechnical services and mine planning team? Reporting to the manager, mine operations support, you will be part of a team of engineers and coordinators who are responsible for drilling engineering and well design aspects within oil sands mines and thermal areas.

Key Accountabilities

  • Review drilling scopes and coordinate changes
  • Provide field fit solutions for the drilling group which satisfies the design intent
  • Provide technical supervision for field staff and contractors in support of the drilling quality assurance (QA) work
  • Ensure coordination with the planning and operational groups for the execution of the boreholes and decommissioning of instruments
  • Ensure proper documentation and field requirements of instrument installations, as-built and turnover packages
  • Facilitate the geotechnical handover packages and ensure instrumentation turnover from Drilling, Logistics and Completions to Field Services
  • Provide updates on programs to project managers and partners
  • Obtain estimates and provide purchase orders for qualified drilling monitors
  • Provide instrument installation QA

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Three to five  years of drilling experience, preferably in oil sands and in situ drilling
  • Experience with mentoring junior staff and working in a multi-functional team
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a diploma in technology is preferred

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, industry recommended practices, well control procedures and well licensing
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite, familiarity with Peloton Wellview, Accumap and SAP is beneficial
  • Strong listening skills, along with extraordinary written and verbal communication
  • Strong initiative, problem solving and proven project management skills
  • Ability to work in multi-functional team environment
  • Highly motivated teammate, adapts to change, open to new ideas and responsibilities and possesses a strong continuous improvement mindset
  • Self-starter with well-developed social and organizational skills in order to handle numerous projects within a tight timeframe

Working Conditions

  • On-call duties to support drilling operations
  • Regular field visits to provide support and technical assistance
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory
  • Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
