Highlights of the job

We are hiring one (1) full-time permanent Engineering Technologist position working out of Edmonton, AB. This position reports to the Manager, Franchise Engineering.

 

As the Technologist, Engineering, you will be accountable for overhead and underground electric distribution design, cost estimating, and liaising with customers. In addition, you will complete design and coordinate project work.

What you'd be responsible for

  • Ensuring thorough, accurate and prompt delivery of overhead and underground electric distribution designs and cost estimates.
  • Performing detailed designs (conversions, relocations, service connections, & system upgrades) on both overhead and underground distribution systems - 5 kV, 15 kV & 25 kV.
  • Ensuring all designs are in compliance the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, and EPCOR Distribution Standards.
  • Performing field visits to ensure design standards are met and are in compliance with the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, and EPCOR Distribution Standards.
  • Providing technical assistance to project managers, contractors, field crews and customers for the purposes of conforming to the Canadian Electrical Code, the Alberta Electrical Utility Code and EPCOR Distribution Standards.
  • Coordinating work with project managers, drafters, field crews, contractors and customers for various projects taking place throughout the City of Edmonton.
  • Providing detailed cost estimates to project managers, contractors, customers and regulatory and accounting staff to ensure project budgets are accurate and provide variance explanations if required.
  • Interfacing with internal and external clients and stakeholders including: developers, utility customers, Distribution Planning, Asset Management, Telus, and the City of Edmonton.
  • Preparing, reviewing and marking for changes detailed structural and electrical drawings including schematics, profiles, site drawings, circuit layouts, cadastral plans, etc.
  • Reviewing Land Titles and Right of Way documents for preparation of easements. Preparing railway, pipeline and right-of way crossing drawings as required.
  • Preparing design and construction packages for Distribution design projects using required software including GE Electric Office, Microstation and IVARA.
  • Performing engineering calculations, such as:
    • Wire sag, tension and swing
    • Calculation of the most economic ruling span
    • Wire clearances
    • Pole selection based on calculated loadings (wind, snow/ice, equipment and conductors)
    • Guy and anchor calculation and analysis
    • Secondary wire sizing and loading
    • Load calculation to ensure proper transformer sizing and loading
    • Voltage drop calculations
    • Cable pulling calculations

What's required to be successful

  • 2-year diploma in electrical or civil engineering technology from a recognized technical institute is required
  • 0-3+ years of related experience is required.
  • Understand principles of electricity and structural design
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution systems and associated design and construction issues
  • Knowledge of design and drafting standards for distribution systems
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience with SAG10, SPIDAcalc, GE Electric Office and Microstation would be considered an asset
  • Ability to perform calculations for designs and set guidelines for drafting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid Alberta Driver's License, with no more than 6 demerits. A driver abstract will be required.

Class: T1

Wage: Starting at $36.10 per hour. Wage will be determined at the time of selection and is based on a combination of factors as outlined in the CA that may be found online. This rate may change subject to ratification of a new collective agreement.

Hours of work: 75 hours biweekly
