We are hiring one FT Permanent Director, Quality Assurance & Environment, working out of Edmonton, AB!

 

The Director of Quality Assurance & Environment (QA&E) is a multi-faceted role that contributes significantly to the vision of Water Canada. As the Director of QA&E, you will be responsible for leading and managing the performance of the Quality Assurance & Environment group. This includes, ensuring accurate monitoring and regulatory reporting, influencing approval conditions, developing optimized plant treatment processes, and leading Water environmental, climate change and public health initiatives. This highly visible position reports to the Senior Vice President, Water Canada and will be supported by a team of Senior Managers.

What you'd be responsible for

As the Director, Quality Assurance & Environment, you will be accountable for, but not limited to:

 

  • Providing input to Water Canada's strategic and operational plans.
  • Leading a team of technical and professional employees in the development of a long-term plan for Quality Assurance & Environment, while identifying and leveraging core competencies and strengths. This includes:
    • Increasing the appropriateness, practice, and commitment to the vision, mission and values.
    • Developing a yearly operational plan.
    • Strategically identifying and executing process improvements.
    • Obtaining and optimally utilizing the required human, financial, material, and technological resources.
  • Reviewing and modifying the organizational design and evaluating staffing levels, in response to the evolution of the business and changing regulatory circumstances, addressing union labour, management and technical resourcing issues.
  • Developing an organizational structure to effectively deliver programs by ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities, and maintaining clear communication with the leadership team and staff.
  • Understanding the operating environment and developing a framework with the right balance of clarity of direction and flexibility. This includes: regulatory conditions, approval requirements, Federal guidelines, Health Department needs, Watershed/Cumulative Effects & Conservation planning, water re-use options, future regulations/guidelines, water quality issues, tracking incidents, and assisting with Business Development.
  • Managing the mitigation of Quality Assurance & Environment risks by ensuring the development, implementation and review of appropriate control mechanisms. 
  • Providing expert water quality advice to the leadership team to assist in evaluating business opportunities or optimizing existing operations.
  • Ensuring the delivery of accurate water quality data on a monthly basis to meet AENV Approval requirements, City PBR requirements and to provide information to the public.
  • Assisting with operational Water facilities in investigating and reporting issues, meeting or upgrading approval requirements, improving Quality Assurance & Environment, and answering water quality questions.
  • Overseeing independent plant and lab quality assurance audits at all sites to ensure the accuracy of water quality data, acceptable laboratory performance and valid regulatory reports.

What's required to be successful

Qualifications, experience and behaviors you will possess are:

 

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental or Chemical Engineering, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution. A graduate or post-graduate degree in a relevant field will be considered an asset.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible managerial and leadership experience in the water, wastewater and/or environmental industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of water and wastewater treatment practices, plant optimization, process development, water quality analysis, Quality Assurance & Environment programs, laboratory data management systems, watershed protection, and environmental assessments.
  • Strong understanding of the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines, Environment Canada (CCME) surface water guidelines, and provincial water and wastewater regulations.
  • Strong leadership skills with the demonstrated ability to lead a team of technical and professional employees.
  • Demonstrated capability to analyze issues, solve problems and make effective decisions.
