We are hiring a permanent full-time Construction Technologist to join the Construction Services group working from our Edmiston site in Edmonton, Alberta.

In the Construction Technologist position you are accountable for providing operational support to the EPCOR wastewater collection and transmission system, which includes planning and scheduling of drainage construction activities, developing and implementing plans, key metrics reporting, collaborating for new service connections, resolving customer/ public complaints and ensuring all field staff have the resources needed while adhering to EPCOR values.

What you'd be responsible for

Reporting to the Construction Manager, as a Construction Technologist you are accountable for, but not limited to:

  • Evaluating/assessing and scheduling work for High Priority Repair including emergencies, Customer Services program and other construction projects, ensuring workload balance for all the construction crews.
  • Ensuring construction crews receive all required information in timely manner prior to construction including estimates, schedules, permits, materials, contractors, work orders etc. 
  • Liaising with infill developers for schedule coordination, ensuring accurate construction completion and recording details of water and sewer assets to achieve / exceed the required corporate Short Term Incentive Program (STIP) metrics.
  • Reviewing work packages from foremen and field staff to ensure maintenance and rehabilitation entries, as-built information are captured in the Drainage asset databases. As well as regularly checking to ensure entries are, complete and following up with field staff for incomplete entries.
  • Representing EPCOR Drainage Construction in engineering design review meetings and ensuring construction execution is achievable as required per EPCOR construction standards and serviceable / maintainable by Drainage Operations.
  • Creating reports in a timely fashion for work completed and future work plans.
  • Developing, monitoring, evaluating issues, proposing changes to ensure key performance indicators (KPIs) for the construction services are within required thresholds, and proposing improvements ensuring the KPIs are achieved while ensuring safety and process efficiency.
  • Collaborating with Drainage stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of drainage infrastructure projects and ensuring to capture all the required construction information.
  • Working closely with various stakeholders including senior management, construction services staff and other sections of Drainage on projects to ensure successful delivery of drainage infrastructure projects within schedule and budget.
  • Answerable to public and customers by delivering a high level of customer service by ensuring call requests, inquiries and complaints are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Providing input to the improvement initiatives of EPCOR Drainage Construction including process improvements for completing construction work with the latest technology and equipment.
  • Creating and maintaining required standard operating procedures (SOP) for Drainage Construction.
  • Preparing, monitoring, analyzing, capital and operational budget for Drainage infrastructure high priority, emergency repair(s) and customer service construction projects and providing recommendations for optimal use of capital and operational budgets.
  • Procurement of contractors and material required for construction.
  • Providing support to prepare requests for quotations including technical specifications and construction scope for contracted services.

What's required to be successful

The qualifications, experience and behaviours necessary to be fully successful in the role include:

  • High school diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education).
  • Completion of a two (2) year Engineering Technology diploma from a recognized post-secondary educational institute, such as NAIT.
  • Membership in ASET as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.).
    • or eligible for membership in ASET as C.E.T.
  • Seven (7) or more years of directly related experience in a Civil Technology capacity.
  • OSCAM (On-Street Construction & Maintenance) Permit
  • Ability to:
    • Articulate your general knowledge of the operation, maintenance and construction of a drainage collection system.
    • Incorporate many aspects of engineering including but not limited to drainage, transportation, structural, geology, hydrology, environmental, and mechanical.
    • Constructively review ideas on an individual basis and in a group setting.
  • Proficiency with:
    • Advanced computer system knowledge including POSSE, GeoFit, Drains, Oracle, IVARA, Microstation, AutoCAD, Pipetech, Granite, Microsoft Office suite.
  • Sound customer service skills and demonstrated ability to interact appropriately and effectively with the public.
  • Proven fundamental understanding of construction standards, why they are relevant and how they apply to Drainage Operations.

Additionally these supplementary technical skills are desirable for you to have:

  • NASCCO (National Association of Sewer Service Companies) PACP (Pipeline Assessment Certification Program) MACP (Manhole Assessment Certification Program) Certification.
  • CUES Canada training on CUES camera equipment and respective software training.
  • Knowledge and understanding of City of Edmonton Drainage and Transportation design and construction standards.

  • This rate may change subject to ratification of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and is based on a combination of factors as outlined in the CA that may be found online.

Hours of work: 80 hours bi-weekly Monday to Friday
