The Ministry of Finance plays a key role in establishing, implementing and reviewing government’s economic, fiscal and taxation policies.

The Indigenous Tax Unit provides tax policy analysis, advice and recommendations to the Minister of Finance and senior ministry officials on matters concerning Indigenous taxation. The Indigenous Tax Unit is responsible for the negotiation, policy/mandate work and implementation matters relating to all tax arrangements in tripartite treaty negotiations with Canada, B.C. and First Nations and represents the Province in this regard.

The Strategic Advisor, Indigenous Tax identifies and analyzes tax policy issues, develops policy options, evaluates implications and provides high quality and comprehensive objective advice and recommendations that are effectively communicated to senior management and the Minister of Finance. The Strategic Advisor ensures advice is based on sound research and analysis and that government policy decisions are accurately implemented through legislation, regulations, and negotiated agreements. The Strategic Advisor also provides written and verbal briefings for the Minister and senior management and work with considerable independence to lead major projects and project teams. Unique to this position, the Strategic Advisor, Indigenous Tax develops First Nation taxation policy options and treaty mandates, establishes and maintains strong working relationships with a number of BC First Nations and represents the ministry at First Nations treaty negotiations.

Qualifications for this role include:

• Post-secondary degree in relevant discipline (e.g., economics, law, finance, commerce, public administration).
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in public policy analysis/development.
• Experience participating in negotiations or consultations with First Nations.
• Experience providing advice and recommendations to senior government officials in both written and verbal form.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Salary$76,200.06 - $107,800.00 Annually
