NRC is involved with innovative research in transportation, engineering, life and medical sciences, and emerging technologies in computer science, electronics, astronomy and nanotechnology. Each area presents a wide and exciting variety of health, safety and environment related aspects ranging from worker health and protection, to animal safety, biosafety, radiation safety, hazardous materials management, noise and air emissions, waste waters, species at risk, and the list goes on. NRC’s Health, Safety and Environment Branch (HSE) proactively establishes, promotes and implements best practices in health, safety and environmental management. The HSE Branch provides enabling and support services to NRC’s Research &Development activities, assuring the health and safety of our employees, our neighboring communities and our environment. As an Health, Safety and Environment Advisor (HSE Advisor), you will partner with your assigned clients in the research centers and corporate branches to expand upon a culture that works proactively to ensure the health and safety of employees, visitors, contractors, our neighboring communities, and the environment. You will be expected to develop a strong knowledge of your client’s business and their resulting challenges related to health, safety and environment stewardship so that you can effectively support implementation and monitor NRC’s occupational health, safety and environmental management policies and programs. The HSE Advisor team members are supported by a strong operations group and risk area experts who will provide technical advice and guidance as required. | |
| Salary | From $63,816 To $75,025 Per Annum |
| Education Requirements | Bachelor’s degree in science (chemistry, biology, biochemistry, environment), engineering, or industrial hygiene. A Master’s degree in one of the disciplines listed above will be considered an asset. Preference may be given to those with a professional certification in a field relevant to the position. A combination of education and experience may be considered – see alternative section below. |
| Essential Skills | Technical Competencies •Knowledge of at least one of the following areas: the Canada Labour Code Part II and/or the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, including applicable directives, standards and guidelines, and their related federal, provincial, and municipal regulations and policies •Ability to interpret applicable environmental, health and safety legislation, relevant standards and/or accepted best practices •Ability to synthesize multiple sources of information or summarize complex problems and present the subject in a concise written or oral briefing •Ability to provide advice and guidance to clients •Ability to lead teams and/or working groups |
| Experience | Candidates must possess: •Significant experience providing HSE support in remote/rural worksites that are multi-faceted operations; AND •Experience working in a scientific, engineering and/or industrial work environment including experience supporting the implementation of environment, and/or health & safety related legislation, regulations, policies and/or programs. Ideally this would include experience such as performing risk assessments, preparing safe work procedures, conducting audits or workplace inspections, providing emergency response support, and/or participating in investigations following incidents and accidents. OR •Significant experience in providing support to business units with respect to the implementation of environment, and/or health & safety related legislation, regulations, policies and/or programs. Ideally this would include experience such as performing risk assessments, preparing safe work procedures, conducting audits or workplace inspections, providing emergency response support, and/or participating in investigations following incidents and accidents. •Experience providing health & safety support in remote/rural worksites that are multi-faceted operations may be considered an asset. Alternative Candidates who possess relevant education in both the science/engineering field and the industrial hygiene field may be considered even if they don’t meet all the stated experience requirements. Candidates who do not possess a significant level of experience but who have very relevant education and experience background may be considered. |
