The following is a summary of some of the duties required in maintaining a traditional Jewish home.

Preparing for the Sabbath, the holiest day of the year, is a major activity. Note that each day ends at darkness, after the first three stars are visible. Because of the change of daylight hours, the times of each day are published for each city worldwide. The Sabbath ends after darkness and these times are also published for each city. The Duties of the caregiver/housekeeper are integral in performing various tasks

Preparing for the various holidays, e.g.; festive days, as well as fast days and preparing the candle lighting for holidays and the Sabbath are also part of the duties.

Changing all of the dishes, cutlery and pots and pans prior to Passover and preparing a Passover Seder table are equally important. Searching for unleavened food products by candlelight on the day before Passover and burning these items in the fireplace requires the caregiver’s assistance.

The Purim Festival involves the moving of living and meals in the Succah, a hut built of thatch outside of the normal residence, usually in the adjacent yard.

Preparing and maintaining my tallit (prayer shawl) and phylacteries is also an important function.

The caregiver must have knowledge of the restrictions of cooking limitations during the Sabbath, from Friday sundown, which varies according to the darkness (see published times) until after Saturday darkness, the times of which are published in my Synagogue bulletins.

Kosher Dietary Observance

To clarify the issue of Jewish dietary laws in summary, one must be able to distinguish between dairy products, meat products and pareve products, the latter of which are neutral, such as fish.

Products which are processed are all labelled with various designations depending upon the rabbinic council which has overseen their manufacture. The caregiver/housekeeper must be able to determine which products are in which category, as there are two complete sets of dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, one for meat and one for dairy. It is only by understanding the classification of each product that the caregiver will know in what utensils to prepare the food and which dishes and cutlery to use in serving.

The issue is compounded by the fact that the food preparation must take into account the diabetic status of the medically compromised senior.
