Capital Power Corporation is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our Health, Safety and Environment team on our Genesee Repowering Project and beyond.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Health and Safety, the Senior Advisor, Health & Safety is accountable for assisting in the application and implementation of the Health, Safety & Environmental Management System and Project Specific Safety Plans. This includes acting as the on-site Health and Safety representative for the Owner/Prime Contractor when required, interacting with on-site personnel including, the construction management team and operations, contractors, sub-contractors, and regulatory bodies as required. Additionally, this position will advise on OH&S acts, codes, and regulations and confirm compliance to regulations and will coordinate the delivery of Health and Safety services.

Key accountabilities include:

•Provide support to the operating units for turnaround as requested.
•Act as a subject matter expert to contractors, employees, supervisors and managers to interpret, implement and ensure consistent application of internal safety standards and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
•Participate, review and provide input into all pre-construction activities including scope of work, contract preparation, construction hazard assessment, project execution plan, project specific safety plans and project orientations.
•Support and guide the implementation of the contractor prequalification and selection process and the health and safety requirements for contractors.
•Lead hazard assessments, and ensure documentation of health and safety site specific procedures are completed for the prevention of health and safety related incidents.
•Identification of support needs including programs/procedures, and training requirements and additional project health and safety support.
•Support the on-going development of a proactive zero injury culture at all levels of the organization.
•Attend and participate in various team meetings, project specific meetings, general safety and team meetings, turnaround planning meetings and contractor/project kick off meetings.
•Provide assistance and support to ensure successful implementation of Corporate Program and Planning initiatives.
•Provide input regarding hiring and oversight of contracted health and safety advisors for project work when required.
•Advise and provide input into the HSE decisions required for the project.
•Provides input into health and safety technical/technology decisions around control methods/measures.
•Develops proactive, cost effective solution focused health and safety processes at the operational level.
•Identifies emerging health and safety issues at the operational level and provides support on health and safety resolution.
•Communicates recommendations for corporate standardization opportunities for health and safety issues.
•Actively participate in and provide guidance on the hazard assessment and control processes such as HAZOP, JHA etc.
•Review and maintain the site emergency response plans and make recommendations for updates or improvements.
•Supports in responding to incidents in the workplace, the investigation process, and the implementation of corrective/preventative action.
•Actively participate in the workplace audit and inspection processes and the implementation of corrective actions to resolve issues identified.
•Participate in the HSE Risk Profile Summary Report Reviews.
•Provides health and safety advice, coaching expertise, guidance, leadership, and support to all levels of the organization.
•Interact with contractors, subcontractors and regulatory bodies as required.
•Supervise and mentor all sub-group safety advisors and administrators where required.
•Serves as the first point of contact and response for employee and contractor health and safety management.
•Demonstrates a strong working rapport/relationships with peers and external contacts.
Education Requirements•Occupational Health and Safety Degree, Diploma or Certificate, or recognized safety designation such as NCSO, CRSP or possess other education such as an OHS Certificate/Diploma or CHSC (Certified Health and Safety Consultant).
Essential Skills•Comprehensive understanding of Health & Safety policy, programs and Health and Safety Management Systems.
•Comprehensive understanding of Health and Safety regulations and legislation and obligations of a Prime Contractor.
•Proficient in Microsoft office applications.
•The ability to demonstrate the application of risk assessment to company operations and activities.
Experience•Minimum 8 years Health and Safety field experience in a senior advisor role in industrial construction setting (Green/Brownfield).
•Health and Safety Turnaround maintenance experience.
•Team lead or management experience would be considered an asset.

Work Settings•Potential for infrequent after hour calls as part of incident or emergency notification process.
•Communication through various office technologies (Microsoft Lync/teleconference/online meetings) required.
•Requirement for minimal travel to project sites throughout Alberta as required to conduct Prime Contactor Reviews.
