Working hours: 8 hours/ day, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (scheduled days and time may vary), 2 varied days off per week; weekend work required

1. Working in all areas of the hog barn:
• Breeding area:
- Carry out Company’s breeding program to ensure production targets are met, which includes Artificial Insemination.
- Identify sows/gilts in heat and cycling for optimum breeding results.
- Pregnancy checking using ultrasound equipment.
- Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines for sows/gilts.
- Monitor pig health and recognize signs of disorder (abortions, discharges, off feed, bleeding boars) and report concerns to Unit Manager or Veterinarian.
• Farrowing area:
- Ensure proper handling and comfort of sows, gilts and piglets.
- Recognize farrowing related problems, treat common farrowing unit diseases and disorders and provide assistance.
- Monitor pig health and recognize signs of disorder (abortions, discharges, off feed, mastitis) and report concerns to Veterinarian or Unit Manager.
- Perform routine procedures with new birthed piglets (castration, clip tails and iron shots).
- Perform cross fostering of piglets to ensure viability and perform weaning procedures.
- Weigh and transport pigs.
- Handle and administer medications and vaccines according to Medication Usage Plans (or prescriptions).
• Nursery area:
- Ensure proper handling and general comfort of weaner pigs.
- Carry out feeding routine for weaner pigs.
- Weigh and move pigs.
- Recognize and treat common diseases and disorders for weaner pigs.
- Monitor pig health and recognize signs of disorder and report concerns.
- Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines for weaner pigs.
• Finishing area:
- Ensure proper handling and comfort of grower and market pigs.
- Carry out feeding routine for finishing pigs.
- Recognize and treat common diseases and disorders of finishing pigs (hernia’s, etc.).
- Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines for finishing pigs.
- Weigh, sort and load market hogs for transport.
2. Ensure proper handling of stock according to 5 freedoms from Animal Welfare Codes of Practice.
3. Carry out Company programs to ensure production targets are met.
4. Carry out feeding routine for piglets, sows and boars and perform routine service on feed equipment.
5. Provide water for animals and perform routine maintenance on water drinkers.
6. Ensure the Unit’s bio-security protocol and Animal Welfare Codes of Practice is followed by all staff.
7. Operate a high pressure washer and ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards for the Unit are met.
8. Follow safe manure management procedure when cleaning out manure pits.
9. Monitor and maintain proper ventilation and temperatures using automated control system
10. Ensure accurate records are kept and submitted in a timely fashion to head office.
11. Responsible to act safely in performing job duties at all times and report safety concerns to the safety representative and/or Unit Manager.
12. Other duties as required.

Education RequirementsCompletion of secondary school is required
ExperienceAt least 1-year of experience in handling swine and barn equipment is required.
