The Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a tenure stream appointment in Spanish at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position start date is July 1, 2020, or shortly thereafter.

We seek candidates whose research expertise is in Second Language Education with a clear research agenda in Language Teaching & Learning or Educational Technology. Spanish must be the primary language of research focus and candidates’ research and teaching interests must complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths.

The successful candidate must have a PhD, or an equivalent doctoral degree, in Spanish Second Language Education, or a related area, by the start date of the appointment or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate evidence of excellence in both teaching and research. Excellence in research can be demonstrated by publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, research grants and awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and the teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations, submitted as part of the application. Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish, the ability to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and the ability to work effectively in English are required. A demonstrated ability to develop and coordinate a university-level Spanish language series is an asset.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate Spanish Language, Education Studies, Linguistics, and/or Language Teaching and Learning courses at the Department of Language Studies, UTM and engage in the experiential learning activities offered in the Department. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an active, independent, innovative, internationally competitive, and externally funded program of research, to contribute to the education and training of undergraduate students as well as graduate students, and to develop innovative curriculum and coordinate language courses in Spanish. They will undertake graduate teaching and supervision as a member of the Graduate Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning < https://www.oise.utoronto.ca/ctl/index.html > at OISE, on the St George campus.
