What responsibilities will you have in this role? Reporting to the Senior Manager, Counselling and Student Well-Being, and as a member of the SWB Team, the Indigenous Counsellor applies traditional knowledge and mental health expertise to enable Indigenous students to succeed. With an advanced understanding of Indigenous traditional knowledge, cultural practices and spirituality, the Counsellor will work collaboratively with departments across the College, including Indigenous Initiatives, Accessible Learning Services, Student Conduct, Office of Antiracism, Equity and Human Rights, and Student Services to facilitate an understanding of the needs of, and provision of supports for Indigenous students. - In addition to providing direct counselling service in the form short-term individual counselling, the Indigenous counsellor will guide students in developing an awareness of the traditions, cultural practices and spirituality that is celebrated within the Indigenous Communities. - Imparts tradition, knowledge, culture, values, and lessons through teachings and role modeling toward academic success. - Provides personal and academic counselling, guidance and support to Indigenous students across the college through appointments, sharing circles and teachings workshops. - Helps students to access services and assists them in succeeding in their programs of study. - Works closely with other staff in Indigenous Services department, including Elders, as well as with the division management team. - Maintains student/applicant information, ensures database is up to date and facilitates outreach. - Teaches, as assigned, courses focused on Indigenous culture, history and current issues. - Participates in preparing Ministry funding requests and reports. - Undertakes a key role in raising awareness of Indigenous students, history, culture and current issues through events, workshops, special initiatives, invited speakers, and consultation about curriculum and resources. - Maintains ongoing links with the local Indigenous community and makes referrals to services within the local community. - Advocates within the College and community on behalf of Indigenous people to build awareness and respect for Indigenous learning styles, culture, values and issues and employs traditional Indigenous cultural values in the counseling process as appropriate. - Participates in internal and external committees on behalf of the College. What qualifications do you need for this role? Candidate must be of Indigenous ancestry (i.e., Turtle Island - First Nations Status and non-Status, Metis or Inuit). - Relevant post-secondary education (Bachelor's degree preferred) in Psychology, Counselling, Indigenous Studies, Social Work or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Additional training and/or extensive experience in counselling Indigenous people is required. - Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous culture, language, history, spirituality, and protocols for working with elders, gained through education in Indigenous Studies. - Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Indigenous people and communities. - Knowledge of community resources pertinent to Indigenous peoples. - Ability to speak one of the Indigenous languages common in southern Ontario highly desirable. - At least three (3) years' direct work experience providing services or working with Indigenous people in educational and community settings. Prior teaching experience, including ability to design, develop, and deliver curriculum centred on Indigenous history and culture. - Experience designing outcomes-based curriculum is desirable. - Strong communication, teamwork and computer skills are required. - Exercise initiative and work well independently. - Ability to relate to students of varying ages and life circumstances is crucial. - Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with Indigenous and non-Indigenous colleagues across the college and in other organizations.
