Central Okanagan Public Schools (School District No. 23), Kelowna BC, provides education services to 22,000 students in the communities of Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, Lake Country and the Regional District of Central Okanagan. We invite applications for the position of:

INDIGENOUS YOUTH WELLNESS WORKER

The Youth and Family Support Program is designed to provide services and cultural support to Indigenous students (while providing support and referrals for families), focusing on the Elementary/Middle School Indigenous student population. The overall goal is to provide counselling services and cultural support in order for Indigenous students to garner a deeper sense of balanced wellness, providing greater connectedness to their learning, overall happiness, self-esteem, and confidence, and success while attending school.

In response to referrals from District support staff, principals, teachers, community agencies and families, the Indigenous Youth Wellness Worker:

• Assists students through crisis situations by providing crisis management, intervention counselling and critical incident follow-up;
• Provides schedules and ongoing one-on-one support to Indigenous students to address psychological, social and cultural needs;
• Facilitates groups with students;
• Facilitates and/or assists with the coordination of referrals of Indigenous students/families to appropriate District resources, community agencies and other Ministries;
• Facilitates and/or assists with the school-based and community assessments, planning, placement, or assistance for Indigenous students;
• Participates in case consultation with professionals involved with students e.g. teachers, principals, support staff, school counsellors, Indigenous Student Advocates, community agencies;
• Acts as a resource person to schools and students related to social or behavioural issues affecting a student’s school life and works collaboratively with school administration and staff regarding education and behaviour plans for students;
• Acts as an advocate and provides support for Indigenous students and families.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
• minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with a preference given to those with a Master's Degree in Social Work or Counselling;
• at least three years' experience working in a clinical setting with youth on health and wellness issues;
• a solid understanding of the Indigenous Culture;
• demonstrated experience working with Indigenous students and their parents/caregivers;
• ability to model cultural teachings;
• demonstrated ability to work as a team member;
• an interest in and desire to work with Indigenous youths with their social and emotional needs and an ability to relate to students and families in an empathetic, respectful, and consistent manner.

Preference may be given to Indigenous applicants of Metis, First Nations and Inuit ancestral descent who can demonstrate knowledge of, and commitment to, Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

This is a full-time (35 hours per week) unionized position, offering a wage rate of $29.97 per hour, plus a comprehensive employee benefit package including extended health and dental coverage, short-term and long-term disability insurance and participation in a defined benefit pension plan.
