Native Child and Family Services of Toronto is an Aboriginal, community controlled multi-service agency. Our mission is to provide support, ensure safety and enhance the quality of life for Aboriginal families, children, and youth within the greater Toronto area. Classification: Contract: August to December 2021 (20 weeks)
Hours: Up to 28 hrs/wk.
Location: Hybrid

PURPOSE

The program training coordinator working in close partnership with internal service providers will provide in- house training to community members to help them overcome barriers preventing them from reaching their full potential. Over 16 weeks participants will move around the medicine wheel and receive teachings that are culturally based to enhance their growth, healing and knowledge about Indigenous history, intergenerational trauma and resiliency. Participants will develop skills in relationship building, healthy communication, crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques human growth and development, attachment styles and the 7 stages of life.

This training will be the fundamental basic training for community members aspiring to work as an Ogichidaa (helper in the community) in a variety of areas including in-home support and the crisis intervention. It can also serve as the foundation for on-going post secondary education.

DELIVERABLES

The program training coordinator will assess each participant’s life situation and ensure he/she has the adequate resources and supports available to take part in the 16 weeks of training.
The coordinator will provide the training, develop a safe space for sharing circles and arrange for various staff within NCFST to provide training in their respective area.
The coordinator will also arrange for external training as needed and for on the job training in the last month of the program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides lifestyle guidance, cultural enrichment and employment preparation;
Supports the development and enhancement of essential skills such as communication, problem solving and working with others;
Fosters leadership and build a solid foundation of emotional support
Provide financial literacy programming and the tools and supports needed to develop the skills and foundations of financial stability
Develop individualised Educational Plans of Care , monitor and evaluate progress on a monthly basis
Provide access to visiting Elders, traditional teachers and spiritual leaders
Encourage participation in the cultural events held at NCFST and the community
Performs other duties as required
Work in a safe manner in accordance with the Society’s Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and all relevant legislation

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
Social Work Degree or Diploma or equivalent
Teaching and or Training experience working in the Indigenous community
Experience working in the indigenous community in an educational capacity

Knowledge:

Must be literate in Aboriginal culture and understand key cultural values, and have a thorough understanding of the Aboriginal historic context;
Have knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and needs of the community, combined with previous community development experience;
Have knowledge of social risk factors in relation to high-priority neighbourhoods and the Urban Aboriginal community;
Have knowledge and skills in the delivery of group programs and workshops that incorporate strength based and evidence based practices;
Have understanding and/or experience in working with the two-spirited (LGBTQQIP2SAA) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit (2S), androgynous and asexual community.
Have flexibility and ability to work within a team approach of service delivery and with Native youth
Have knowledge of Infant Mental Health

Skills:

Excellent organizational, oral/verbal/written communication skills;
Excellent computer and technical skills
Initiative and respect for confidentiality;
Pass a vulnerable police records check;
Flexibility to be able to work evenings and weekends.
Familiarity with community resources or equivalent based on training and experience.
Ability to lead a team as programs grow
Proven skills in program design, development, implementation and evaluation;
Demonstrates high level of initiative and autonomy.
