Senior Environmental Protection Officer

$62,983.74 - $78,666.02 annually plus 5% Recruitment and Retention Allowance

The Senior EP Officer protects the environment by providing authoritative and professional advice to others on the Environmental Management Act and the management of industrial, municipal, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials. Manages authorizations of high-risk, complex and unique sites/situations in the region, conducting source monitoring to study impacts of toxins and wastes to lead compliance, continuous improvement and effective management of waste discharges into the environment. Leads regional and area-based environmental protection planning, developing systematic approaches, policies and regulations. The position provides authoritative technical and policy advice to ministry staff, elected officials, industry and municipal executives, other agencies and the public on controversial or complex waste management issues.

Qualifications for this role include:
• Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering or a related field and three years related experience OR Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Engineering Degree with at least five years of related experience.
• Registered in good standing, or eligible for immediate* registration, as a fully licensed professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia (EGBC).

*Immediately eligible means you are a fully licensed registered professional engineer in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can be immediately transferred to EGBC.

Related Experience must include the following:
• Experience related to environmental protection and Industrial and municipal waste management, such as:
o Experience with reduction, recycling, treatment and disposal technologies.
o Experience conducting environmental monitoring, assessments and reporting related to waste discharges.
o Experience with environmental planning processes such as Liquid or Solid Waste Management Planning.
o Experience with hazardous material spill response, hazardous waste and contaminated sites.
• Experience using computer software, including word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (Excel) and database management.
• Experience in working with multiple projects or assignments.
• Experience in negotiation with staff and clients from a diverse background.
