PURPOSE OF THE  POSITION:

As the Safety Specialist you will update and develop written safety rules, procedures and work standards. These efforts will support the CP Safety Management System and comply with safety and regulatory requirements. This position works closely with the Operations teams to ensure understanding and compliance to all rules and procedures, identifying and implementing action to improve safety performance.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide direction as a subject matter expert on the application and interpretation of functional safety rules, procedures and standards within the operating department;
  • Develop specific functional safety plans for each calendar year;
  • Monitor safety performance within the operating department and conduct functional safety audit and inspection activities;
  • Lead and/or participate in field activities across Canada and the US;
  • Recommend improvements to activities within the operating department’s safety plan during the calendar year;
  • Provide leadership in the investigation of all safety incidents;
  • Participate and provide direction to the policy committee and safety advisory boards to ensure they function within the framework of the regulations and terms of reference;
  • Authority to represent CP when meeting with external regulators (Transport Canada/Employment and Social Development of Canada/Federal Railroad Administration/Occupational Safety Health Agency).

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Post-secondary education, or equivalent experience  preferably in the safety field is viewed as an assets;

  • 3 years’ minimum experience in railroad operations or related field experience;
  • 3 years’ safety experience is an asset;
  • Strong verbal, written, communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to analyze complex data and use knowledge to guide actions;
  • Aptitude for working with various computer programs & safety platforms;
  • Practical knowledge of internal & external safety programs and understand regulations in both the US and Canada;
  • Must have the ability to work a flexibility nontraditional hours  and have the ability to work in extreme weather conditions/situations for extended periods of time;
  • Must have a valid Passport and be able to travel internationally.

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CP. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
