The opportunity
Our Sustainability team is evolving to meet the needs of our growing business and we are expanding our presence in Calgary, Alberta to support our Public Affairs & Communications department.


We are seeking a driven Senior Environmental Advisor who will report directly to the Manager, Sustainability. You will be an integral part of the team responsible for conducting technical analysis on greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants in support of corporate environmental and sustainability reporting, as well as assisting with the development of corporate risk mitigation and sustainability strategies.


In this role you will have specific responsibilities for government mandated compliance reporting and voluntary reporting of emission sources and will be responsible for developing and supporting
implementation of strategies to sustain regulatory compliance with Federal and Provincial regulations and company best practices and procedures. You will also provide environmental expertise to various stakeholders including internal TC Energy groups as well as government staff and industry peers.


What you’ll do

  • Prepare government mandated air and GHG compliance reporting of emission sources, permit applications and emissions inventories; recommend control technology equipment and processes to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and evaluate potential for risk
  • Function as lead for a team of internal SMEs to align corporate Sustainability and ESG air emissions metrics with a goal measuring and monitoring TC Energy’s performance
  • Collaborate with internal (field operations, corporate, community relations, legal) and external stakeholders (e.g. regulatory agencies) to manage environmental risk
  • Provide technical assistance in the evaluation and management of climate change as a Sustainability focus area and air emission issues in compliance with environmental regulations and laws
  • Audit/review company operating procedures and processes; identify gaps, make recommendations and track implementation
  • Analyze and assess the impact of emerging environmental issues and risks and develop mitigation strategies to assist meeting Sustainability and environmental goals
  • Lead negotiations with regulatory agency staff, internal business partners and other stakeholders to aid in influencing project or corporate issues, regulatory initiatives or industry standards.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies mitigating potential non-compliances and guiding regulatory policy initiatives 
  • Commission and oversee consultant work for air emissions and GHG verification, modeling, permit application, emerging issue, risk assessment and regulatory mitigation strategies, data inventory and audit functions
  • Manage projects, schedules and budgets as necessary
  • Manage the communication of complex, technical information to leadership as well as to internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop and coordinate responses to public, regulatory and legislative questions on air emission and GHG issues
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • A completed Bachelor's Degree, or preferably Master's Degree, in environmental sciences, geography, public policy or related fields from a recognized post-secondary institution is a requirement
  • Minimum 6-8 years’ experience in managing environmental planning and permitting for pipelines and other energy projects, including routing/siting, environmental planning, project management,
  • permitting and environmental compliance
  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental laws/regulations practices pertaining to pipeline development and other energy project development
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with the Federal permitting process for Pipelines in Canada
  • Previous experience solving complex and unique regulatory, permitting and compliance issues on major projects
  • Expertise in developing/implementing influence strategies with respect to environmental regulatory initiatives
  • Expertise in assessing policy and regulatory issues to support development of corporate reporting and positions 
  • Commitment to client service and support
  • Experience working with non-governmental organizations
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with an emphasis on tact and diplomacy; ability to communicate with technical and non-technical users
  • Strong team orientation, demonstrating a high level of collaboration and cooperation within functional and cross-functional teams as well as independent initiative and motivation
  • Proven systems thinker with strong analytical, process and problem resolution skills
