Currently, the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) is looking for a full-time MOECC-Licensed Water/Wastewater Operator to join its Cross-functional Utility Team in Scugog, ON. The hours of this role are Monday to Thursday, 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, and Friday 8.30 am to 1 pm, though some flexibility will be required to work Rotational On-Call duties 2.25 hrs./day on weekends and after-hours monitoring through the week. As part of a cross-functional team, you will assist in monitoring, operating, and maintaining the community's water and wastewater treatment plants, and the water distribution and wastewater collection systems at performance levels that meet regulatory standards in Ontario. This includes providing reliable, uninterrupted water and wastewater services to the MSIFN community with the assistance of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA) and a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Your typical responsibilities include: Monitoring, controlling, and responding to alarms for the water treatment plants, water distribution, and, wastewater collection system using SCADA Systems Conducting routine onsite security checks of the treatment plant and surrounding structures, operational review of the treatment processes, chemical feed systems, pumping systems, interpreting readouts on onsite meters, analyzers, and other monitoring devices, and making adjustments to optimize operations, required Conducting a routine evaluation of treated water quality to ensure compliance with Ontario Regulation for safe drinking water; Conducting a routine evaluation of wastewater effluent to ensure compliance with Ontario Regulation for wastewater effluent discharge Carrying out routine sampling and analyses programs for water and wastewater, including localized analyses at plant laboratories, and shipped samples to external laboratories. Maintain daily onsite logs of quantities of water treated and distributed, quantities of wastewater treated and discharged, quantities of chemicals used and calculating and recording chemical dosages and feed rates Carrying out water and wastewater system maintenance in accordance with the MSIFN-approved preventative maintenance program and in compliance with proper health and safety practices Conducting calibration of online instruments for monitoring and controlling of the water and wastewater operation Attending accredited job-related training to achieve and maintain MOE licenses Maintaining an inventory of parts and materials to support ongoing operation and maintenance of the treatment plants and related infrastructure Conducting/participating in community education and safety awareness workshops related to water supply and water conservation practices, and wastewater treatment and disposal Participating in budget preparation and asset management for water and wastewater | |

Education Requirements | Must have 3 years of Wastewater Treatment and/or Wastewater Collection system experience. Completion of a related post-secondary college diploma in an Environmental Science or engineering-related program, with a focus on water and wastewater principles and technologies Must have Class 2 Licenses in Water Treatment and Water Distribution & Supply, and Class 2 Licenses in Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection WHMIS and Health and Safety Certification, First Aid/CPR Certification Knowledge and experience using SCADA, CMMS, and Water Quality databases |
Essential Skills | You will also have previous experience working within or with a First Nations community or other governments in policy and community development, a valid driver's license with $1M liability insurance, and access to a vehicle. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, and the internet. You'll also join us with knowledge of/or experience with the following: CPIC/VSS acceptable to position upon conditional offer Understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions, teachings, and community dynamics Understanding of legislation governing First Nations Knowledge and experience working in a water and wastewater utility Competence and Experience to work safely with tools Knowledge and experience with water treatment concepts and technologies; knowledge and Experience with water distribution & Supply concepts and the infrastructure Knowledge and experience with chemical handling including Sodium Hypochlorite as used for disinfection in water and wastewater treatment systems Experience conducting water/wastewater testing in a laboratory Initiative and ability to work independently to meet deadlines Ability to analyze problems, recommend and implement solutions Good interpersonal skills to deal with First Nation residents Knowledge of Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act 2002 and its Regulations Knowledge of the Safe Drinking Water for First Nations Act and its regulations Demonstrated facilitation skills Demonstrated computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Experience using E-Mail and the Internet Lastly, you will have a working knowledge of and respect for Indigenous culture, customs, traditions, and issues. Your excellent communication skills in both written and verbal form as well as your organizational skills and timekeeping abilities will ensure your success as you work towards competing deadlines. |
