The opportunity
Our Pension Asset Management team is hiring a Pension Analyst in Calgary, Alberta to support our Canadian and U.S. pension plans. We are seeking a dynamic Pension Analyst who has knowledge and experience in capital markets. This individual has the proven skills, competencies and capacity to support the investment of billions of dollars across various plans and trusts.

 

What you’ll do
Responsible for various plans and trusts including defined benefit, defined contribution (401k), capital accumulation, health and welfare plans, and pipeline abandonment trusts including the following:
• Primary contact for investment managers and custodians/trustees regarding trust activity and performance
• Monitor investment portfolios in relation to mandates and contractual arrangements, and consult to resolve any discrepancies or violations
• Prepare performance reporting for various plans for internal distribution based on careful analysis of data
• Monitor compliance of various plans with their respective investment policies and report on variances
• Assess asset mix and facilitate transactions related to portfolio rebalancing, funding and redemptions
• Access custody platforms for accounting and performance data and perform analysis
• Monitor and assess portfolio risks
• Prepare materials for distribution and participate in reporting to committees
• Assess investment structure for defined contribution and capital accumulation plans and make recommendations related to changes
• Review governance policies and procedures to ensure processes are in compliance
• Prepare requests for proposals and make recommendations related to service providers after comprehensive analysis
• Act as lead on ad hoc projects
• Provide recommendations based on thorough analysis to implement various strategic initiatives for multiple pension plans
• Monitor, assess and report to committees on plan costs
• Work with internal departments (financial reporting, human resources, legal and tax) and external service providers (investment managers, custodians/trustees/record-keepers, consultants, actuaries, external auditors, transition managers) as required to deliver results
• Ensure regulatory and other compliance deadlines are met
• Monitor assets and investment performance of pipeline abandonment trusts

 

Minimum qualifications
• Relevant undergraduate degree in finance, business or economics
• Minimum 6 years of experience related to investment or capital markets

 

Preferred qualifications
• Completion of at least Level 1 of the Chartered Financial Analyst program would be an asset
• Pension industry experience would be an asset
• Accounting background/experience would also be an asset
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to represent the company in a professional manner
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Able to work in and contribute to a team in a positive and engaged manner
• Well-developed analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills
• Keen interest in and understanding of investing and capital markets
• Able to make recommendations based on sound financial analysis
• Strong spreadsheet and presentation skills, utilizing Excel and Word
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
• Results-oriented approach with the ability to complete tasks independently
