The opportunity
The Engineering Standards Governance (ESG) team is in service to enable engineering as a competitive advantage for TC Energy to deliver cost competitive, safe, reliable and sustainable assets over their lifecycle. The ESG tam is a multi-disciplinary engineering team that manages the performance and continual improvement of TC Energy’s Engineering Standards Collection (ESC), leads TC Energy’s Practice of Engineering (POE) and Engineer in Training (EIT) Programs, and provides subject matter expertise to our Business Units on specific engineering disciplines and standards. 


The ESG team is evolving to meet the needs of our growing business and we are expanding our presence in Calgary, Alberta to support Mechanical Engineering Design and Construction Standards. 


We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer who has knowledge and experience in mechanical engineering design and construction standards for energy infrastructure assets, industry codes and regulations, engineering design practices and quality assurance, and research and development relating to technical requirements. The successful candidate will have proven skills, competencies and capacity to act as a subject matter expert on mechanical standards, collaborate with business unit engineering teams to resolve feedback, variances and issues, maintain and improve standards, assure regulatory and code compliance, and provide independent reviews of the quality of engineering deliverables as part of project stage gate assurance.   
 

What you’ll do
• Act as TC Energy’s contact and subject matter expert (SME) for various Engineering Standards Collection (ESC) documents relating to mechanical engineering design and construction; this includes cross business unit mechanical standards, specifications, procedures and work aids
• Maintain and improve ESC documents based on performance information such as variance trends, feedback, incidents, lessons learned and opportunities for improvement
• Lead continuous improvement and management of change efforts on mechanical standards including collaboration with stakeholders and SMEs across TC Energy’s business units and corporate functions
• Assure compliance to regulations, codes and external standards through TC Energy’s Legal Requirements Monitoring Process and legal register
• Provide independent reviews on behalf of engineering as part of project stage gate assurance and to evaluate the quality and completeness of engineering deliverables and implementation of standards
• Establish and lead a community of practice focused on pipeline mechanical design and share lessons learned and best practices across business units
• Support engineering excellence and quality improvement strategies and initiatives
• Resolve variance requests and feedback submissions on mechanical standards
• Provide support to Projects and Operations engineering teams and engineering service providers on the implementation of mechanical standards and requirements, and collaborate to resolve issues
• Initiate and lead research and development projects to improve standards and requirements or enable more effective implementation
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with impacted stakeholders across the organization
 

Minimum Qualifications
• University degree in Mechanical Engineering and professional engineer (P. Eng.) designation with APEGA or equivalent governing body
• Minimum of 10 years of progressive relevant experience
• In depth knowledge of applicable industry regulations, codes and standards including CSA Z662 Gas Pipeline Systems, CFR 49-Part 192 & 195, ASME B31.8 and B31.4
• Experience in technical writing of engineering standards, specifications and procedures
• Technical experience in engineering design, design oversight and quality assurance
• Ability and willingness to travel to project sites as required
 

Preferred Qualifications
• Broad engineering expertise is an asset
• Experience with research and development, innovation and technology development on engineering practices
• Driven to achieve technical and business results balancing the needs of customers within technical, safety and regulatory boundaries
• Ability to build relationships with stakeholders and partner groups
• Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex issues to different levels of leadership
