This is a temporary opportunity until approximately June 26, 2020.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development is the Province’s agency responsible for land and resource management in B.C., including the protection of the Province’s archeological and heritage resources.

The Riparian Areas Regulation Biologist position is part of the recently established Fish and Aquatic Habitat Branch, which is dedicated to the sustainable management of fish resources. This new branch is composed of staff from population science, terrestrial habitat and hydrological teams, and works closely with regional operations staff. The goal of the Branch is to create sustainable and resilient fish resources in abundance, to meet cultural, environmental, social, and economic interests for current and future generations.

As the Riparian Areas Regulation Biologist, you will provide senior professional advisory services to the Riparian Area Regulation (RAR) program area in the natural resource sector. You will function at the interface of provincial and local government authorities, supported by a professional reliance model. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your partnership building and technical skills across a range of jurisdictions. In this role, you will be at the forefront of ministry communications with the partners that make the RAR function.

Qualifications for this role include:

• Degree and 2 years of experience in a natural resource field OR diploma in the natural resource sector and 4 years of experience. Preference may be given to applicants whose education/ background is associated with habitat protection and management.
• Preference may be given to applicants who are registered as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the College of Applied Biology; or eligible to become a RPBio within 6 months of appointment.
• Preference may be given to applicants with two or more years of experience in negotiating/mediating solutions in natural resource management.
• Preference may be given to applicants with two or more years of experience working on issues concerning local governments, or a working understanding of local government land use planning.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience developing or implementing policy or regulation associated with the protection and management of riparian or aquatic resources.
